Blog Feature: Another Housewife

22 Jan

I met Mrs C from Another Housewife on the Women in Red message boards. She and I have two very different approaches to life, which is actually one of the things I enjoy most about her posts. She looks at things so differently than I do, that reading her blog helps me expand my horizons.

At the same time, we have a few things in common, too. Not just being bloggers, but we’re both avid readers. I love that she looked up the costs of the books she got from the library to see how much going there saves her.

It’s a Carnival!

19 Jan

Over at the Dog Ate My Wallet, my personal finance blog, I’m celebrating a milestone. I’ve decided to host a Pets and Personal Finances Carnival. The carnival will go up on Saturday, January 28. If you’ve got a post about pets and money or money and pets, send it on in so that you can be included in the fun.

Just head on over to my Contact page for the email address to send the link to. Please make sure the subject line says Pets/PF Carnival so that I don’t lose it. Entries from any kind of blog are welcome.

No SOPA

18 Jan

I thought about not posting anything today as part of the SOPA protest, but since I accidentally skipped Monday, I think it may just look like the Seattle snowpocalypse knocked out my connection.

I am against SOPA. As a writer, I am for copyright protections, but not handled in such a mishmash, no one knows if they’re breaking the law or not, kind of way. Do not let your internet provider be the one who chooses what sites you can visit.

The First Amendment protects us from censorship. Don’t let them claim the internet is not protected by the Constitution.

Blog Feature: Two Pitties in the City

14 Jan

Given a Chicago alderman’s renewed attempt to ban Pit Bulls in the city, I want to highlight the wonderful people at Two Pitties in the City.

I love Pits. I think they are absolutely wonderful, sweet, and loving dogs. It is not the fault of the dogs that they’re currently the breed of choice for idiots.

The people at Two Pitties are also the founders of SociaBulls (look for them on FaceBook), a group that takes their Pits (and other dogs) on large group walks throughout the city. Hopefully, they will be able to counter some of the negative press.

Blog Feature: Money Beagle

07 Jan

Can you guess what first attracted me to this blog? Besides the name, head over there and see the picture of the adorable Beagle on his header. Anyone who likes their dog enough to name their blog after it is good in my book.

Money Beagle was kind of a gateway personal finance blog for me- the first one I was reading where I didn’t already have a relationship with the author.

This week, he posted about the coming price increase for Little Caesar’s pizza, and the already here increase on Crazy bread. Darn it, now I’m craving crazy bread…

Happy New Year

01 Jan

New Year, new you? New Year’s Resolutions? Are you reflective, or are you making plans and setting goals? Or is it just another day, albeit one that comes with a day off from work?

I don’t make resolutions. I do like to reflect and plan on a fairly regular basis, so why not as the calendar year rolls over.

You’ve heard some of these goals before, because I just have to keep plugging away- work on my writing, submit more, review our budget, adjust for changing circumstances, volunteer. I can’t do it all, but I can do quite a bit.

Blog Feature: Doggerel

31 Dec

Abby over at Doggerel was the first other pet blogger I started following on a regular basis. A lot of the other pet sites I now follow came originally from her Pup Links.  So, thank you for introducing me to some great sites.

Abby doesn’t have a dog, yet, but hopes that will change soon. In the meantime, she’s doing all the studying and volunteering she can, in order to be the best dog owner ever when she finally gets her chance.

What I know is that whatever dog Abby and her husband bring home, will be one lucky pup.

Blog Feature: Money for College Project

24 Dec

Today’s featured blog is Money for College Project, a personal finance blog that tries to focus on ways to pay for school without getting student loans- something I am highly supportive of, though I don’t find student loans to be the boogeyman that some do.

This week the question was specifically asked: Is a College Degree Worth Taking Out a Student Loan?

It is not a rhetorical question. It is a question the Occupy folks are asking, though after the fact. It’s a question that we as a society need to be answering. Should an education require mortgaging your future?

Blog Feature: That Mutt

18 Dec

Sick yesterday so forgot to post this

I read mostly personal finance and pet blogs. Since I started this feature with a personal finance blog, this week, we’re looking at a pet blog. Lindsay at ThatMutt is one of my favorite pet bloggers. She has a practical world view and is more about getting pets into good homes than into a “perfect” home. As Voltiare said, “the perfect is the enemy of the good”.

Today, I am highlighting her post about running with dogs, since that’s her business and I am uber impressed by her ability to run a marathon, let alone roughly 15 miles, every day.

Blog Feature: Daily Money Shot

10 Dec

New feature this week. On Saturdays, I’m going to highlight a post from the previous week that was put up by one of the blogs I read regularly.

For the inaugural feature, I’ve chosen Managing December Birthdays from Daily Money Shot. This was chosen because I happen to have a December birthday and I love what Jana and her husband are doing to make sure their daughter’s birthday remains her special day, despite the rest of the world’s focus on the major holidays happening this time of year.

Wishing Jana’s little girl, and all the other December babies Happy Birthday!
