Book Review: Agatha H and the Airship City by Phil & Kaja Foglio

15 Oct

This is the written novelization of the first two volumes of the Girl Genius graphic novels. In other words, if you are already a fan, there is nothing new here, at least not technically. But I still recommend reading it, and not just from a “completist” perspective.

There are things that can be done in a traditional novel that can not be accomplished in a graphic novel (and vice versa), including some deeper character introspection.

This was a fun, fast read, and I hope that Phil & Kaja Foglio are able to do more novelizations of the Girl Genius stories.

I’ve gushed about Girl Genius before. It remains one of the best things on the internet.

I don’t read it every week. After reading it the first time, when I had a couple years worth of pages to go through, I get frustrated just reading one or two pages at a time. So, I let it sit. I go back every month or two and do all my reading at once.

I always hate when I reach the most recent entry because it means I have to wait again. But it would be even worse if it ever really ended.

If you are not reading Girl Genius by Phil & Kaja Foglio, you should be. In fact, go read it right now and come back once you’re done. It might take you a little while, but that’s okay. I’ll wait.

Girl Genius is steam punk done right. The story lines and the artwork are bright and vibrant. The characters are likable, lovable even, and the heroine is equal parts mad scientist (she will take over the world), daring adventurer (even if she has to do it country by country), and caring friend (she risks her life to save her friends).
