I’ve MOVED

29 Oct

As of Saturday, Oct 29, 2011, 100 Words On will be found exclusively over at my new website: www.erinshanendoah.com/100wordson

And as of Sunday evening, the whole erinshanendoah.com site should be up and running.

I’m excited about taking this next step in my on-line presence and hope that my readers will join me in making the transition. You may even find more to love- like my pet or personal finance blogs. Or perhaps you’ll choose to try your hand at super short form writing with the weekly/monthly micro-fiction contest.

Just be warned, before Sunday evening, it’s still a work in progress.

Finding Motivation

23 Oct

I have been lacking motivation when it comes to my fiction writing for a while now. I love to write. I love sharing my voice with others. But I need external motivation. I know this. So, I’ve made a couple decisions.
I am going to submit an excerpt of the novella I am working on, and possibly a short story, to NorWesCon for critique. It will be the first time I’ve ever submitted to a convention, so I’m starting in my comfort zone- a sci-fi/fantasy convention known for a respected writers’ workshop, instead of starting at a literary convention.

Geek Girl Con: Writing Through Real Life

12 Oct

I attended 2 panels at Geek Girl Con.

I could’ve been on the panel for Writing Through Real Life. Their advice was advice I’ve given, though I’m at a point in my writing that I need to hear this stuff again, from people outside my regular critique group. The content was solid.

I should’ve been on the panel, or the panel shouldn’t have been made up of people from the same MFA program. This wasn’t meant to be a recruiting event for one, or any, MFA program. It was supposed to be about finding time to write in real life.

Meta Post

13 Sep

On Saturday night, as I was falling in to bed at 12:30am (technically not Saturday anymore), I realized that I had never put up a post for that day. I felt bad, but mostly tired, very tired.

On Sunday, at critique group, I mentioned I was considering changing this from a 7 day a week blog to a week day only set up. The non-verbal reactions of my group quickly brought home the point that that would be a bad idea.

So we will remain at 7 days a week. And I will try not to miss any more days.

A New Word Processor

18 Jul

I removed Open Office from my laptop because it’s just too big for the processing power of my $300, three year old, barely meets the specs for its Vista OS laptop. But that means that I need to find a new way to work on my fiction when I go to critique group. So, I’m giving Google docs a try.

This morning was the first time I’d gotten into Google docs since I uploaded the pieces there. After some confusion about which account they were in and then a computer crash, I was able to view and edit my documents.

Priorities

24 Apr

I am apparently not home enough. At least according to my Beagle, who decided that instead of typing this post, I should be paying attention to her. She is small enough to jump on my lap, and so up she came. However, she’s big enough that she can’t really settle. She’s constantly having to shift her weight in order to stay balanced on my thighs and knees. This is not an issue on the couch or in the recliner, but on the computer chair, its precarious. So off the computer I get in order to give the puppies some love.

New Year Goals

01 Jan

I rarely make New Year’s resolutions as they always seem like promises that you have permission to break. I did know one woman who made one made a resolution to give up chocolate. And she did, permanently. That will never be me.

But a new year is as good a time as any to evaluate my goals and make some changes. This year, I want to grow all three of my blogs. Here I need to maintain. On Life by Pets I need to get on a regular MWF schedule. Plus Fiction in 50 is turning in to a contest.

Nobody’s Perfect

16 Nov

“China Details Activits in Mental Hospitals” You won’t see this headline on MSN now, as its been changed to “China holds activists in mental wards” but I loved the original, misspelled, and misleading headline. What are activits? Why would you detail them in mental wards? Maybe they’re hallucinations?

I have heard (thank you Candace Dempsey) that at MSN the policy is “Get it up, then get it right”.  I know none of us are perfect, but every once in a while, its nice to see proof of it in black and white, even if it lasts less than five minutes.

Freelance Writing

15 Nov

Had a good time at the panel on getting started in freelance writing put on by the Seattle Writergrrls. The panel included two established freelance journalists– Amanda Castleman and Candace Dempsey- and Gary Marshall, a literary attorney.

Highlights of the talk included negotiating kill fees- what you get if they accept your story but decide to never run it (on a pay after publish contract, versus a pay on receipt contract)- and negotiating first publishing rights only, so that you as the author maintain ownership of your work.

The best part, though, was the chance to network with other writers.

Sunday Morning Critique (2)

14 Sep

Sometimes I feel like I should write about my critique group more, but how many ways can you say “I love these people”. My group is full of talented writers and critquers. I learn something new every time we meet.

Even when I don’t have anything to new read, they inspire me. They help me keep on track with what I want to do with my writing. We talk not just about what we’ve written, but the business of writing. They support me while at the same time being honest. I know if they say something is good, it is.
