How I Met Your Mother Rant

10 Jan

Okay, this Barney wedding plotline, that the HIMYM writers are playing with, is starting to bug me, mostly because I feel like it is all a tease. We started with the wedding as the season finale, what 2 full seasons ago (okay, maybe not that long, but it feels like it) when we were meant to think it was Ted’s wedding. The next season opener, we learned it was Barney’s. But then we go like half a season or more without returning to the wedding. I’d have forgotten about it if it weren’t for reruns. Get on with it already.

Not Dead, Just Moved Elsewhere

09 Jan

It always saddens me when I hear that another species is endangered or extinct. Conversely, it makes me happy when we discover that a species is not actually extinct, as is the case with a specific species of tortoise from the Galapagos Islands.

Considering that the tortoises all probably look the same to the untrained, it’s not surprising scientists thought this species was gone when it disappeared from the island it lived on. It is a happy discovery to find the offspring of the species (mixed breed) on another island. Apparently, they just moved (or were moved by humans, anyway).

WHL Hockey: Seattle vs Spokane

08 Jan

We had a good time last night as we watched the Seattle Thunderbirds take on the Spokane Chiefs. The T-Birds started off strong, but then there was a fight and a penalty on Seattle, and it just changed the whole momentum of the game. After that, Spokane scored 3 goals in the first period. Seattle wasn’t able to come back, even though they played much better hockey the rest of the game- except for the power play. Their power play was awful. They did not score a single time while on the power play, but did get scored on. Sad.

Blog Feature: Money Beagle

07 Jan

Can you guess what first attracted me to this blog? Besides the name, head over there and see the picture of the adorable Beagle on his header. Anyone who likes their dog enough to name their blog after it is good in my book.

Money Beagle was kind of a gateway personal finance blog for me- the first one I was reading where I didn’t already have a relationship with the author.

This week, he posted about the coming price increase for Little Caesar’s pizza, and the already here increase on Crazy bread. Darn it, now I’m craving crazy bread…

Dogs Know

06 Jan

Dog owners know that our dogs understand not just the tone of our voices or our body language, they understand our facial expressions too. You can’t hide what you’re feeling from you dog. Science has now proven what we know.

Scientists say dogs have evolved to read humans. A dog trainer doesn’t agree. She thinks that that’s just the way dogs communicate.

Honestly, I have to agree with the scientists. Yes, dogs read body language of other dogs and humans, but dogs don’t have facial expressions the way humans do. We have bred an understanding of us in to them.

I know that name

05 Jan

Unless it’s Spielberg or Lucas, if you advertise a movie by naming the director, I probably don’t want to see it. If you name Cameron or Bay, I know I don’t want to see it (at least not pay to see it). So for the most part, I don’t pay attention to directors. Writing and acting matter much more to me.

Still, at the end of The Debt, when John Madden’s name flashed across the screen, I couldn’t help but think, “that was totally a Madden ending”. Then I wondered if I should figure out what other movies he’s directed.

Movie Review: The Debt

04 Jan

I vaguely remember hearing about The Debt when it first came out. I do love Helen Mirren. But we rarely go see movies in theaters, and it is one that flew enough below the radar that I had completely forgotten about it.

We watched it tonight. It was a little more drama than action, but well-acted drama, which matters. I’m pretty sure I had heard the basics of the story before (thanks to a writing friend), but that didn’t mean I knew what was going to happen. The ending was certainly not uplifting, but still satisfying. And I’ll take that.

My Life is a Yo-Yo

03 Jan

I am going to try and get ahead and get a number of posts written for here, but right now, I make no promises. Life in my world is on a yo-yo string at the moment. We have been up, then down, then really down, and now we’re back on the way up. Hoping it continues that way, but honestly, I’d also be content for the yo-yo to just stop moving, one way or the other.

So if things flake out here, I am sorry. But even if I do disappear for a while, I promise, I will be back.

We’re Still Here

To go along with Thursday’s post about the Denisovans (I didn’t give their name), we have proof that ancient modern humans bred with both the Neanderthals and the Denisovans. In fact, I think you could argue that modern humans might not exist if it hadn’t been for the interbreeding.

DNA tests using information from bone marrow registries show that more than half of our immune system related DNA comes from Neanderthals and Denisovans. Without that, some disease may have wiped us off the planet.

While we don’t know what happened to them, I think we can say, they saved us.

Happy New Year

01 Jan

New Year, new you? New Year’s Resolutions? Are you reflective, or are you making plans and setting goals? Or is it just another day, albeit one that comes with a day off from work?

I don’t make resolutions. I do like to reflect and plan on a fairly regular basis, so why not as the calendar year rolls over.

You’ve heard some of these goals before, because I just have to keep plugging away- work on my writing, submit more, review our budget, adjust for changing circumstances, volunteer. I can’t do it all, but I can do quite a bit.
