Movie Review: Goon

20 Jun

I admit it. I loved Goon. Sean William Scott is one of my favorite young actors, and this role was just perfect for him. Allison Pill was adorable. Jay Baruchel was having fun. Liev Schreiber was also great, but honestly, my favorite bit of casting was Kim Coates as the coach.

This was a fun hockey movie, examining the role we all associate with hockey but rarely make movies about- the goon, the enforcer, the guy whose sole job is to give and take hits, give and take punches, to protect his more skilled teammates from those hits and punches.

#LAKings #StanleyCup Champions

12 Jun

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Kings, StanleyCup Champions. Last night they won the Cup on home ice. That has to be an amazing feeling. Additionally, this marks the first time LA will ever get its name on the Cup, and the first time an 8th seeded team won the Cup. Kings, you have much to be proud of.

As a Devils fan, this was not the outcome I was hoping for, but how much can I really complain? After missing the playoffs entirely last year, New Jersey battled through the Flyers and the Rangers to reach the Cup finals.

Stanley Cup Finals: #NJDevils vs #LAKings game 4

07 Jun

How do you come back from a 3-0 game deficit in a series? One game at a time. Will the Devils win 4 in a row and win the Cup? Four in a row is hard; that’s why teams don’t sweep very often. But the Devils won 4 in a row against the Flyers. Of course, the Kings sweptSt. Louisin that same round.

The Kings only need to win one game to win the Stanley Cup, so the Devils cannot afford to think about 3 more in a row. They can only think one game at a time.

Stanley Cup Finals: #NJDevils vs #LAKings Game 2

03 Jun

Last night’s game was a good one. Brodeur had an amazing game, and after the Devils tied it up, the energy and intensity they maintained was fabulous. Jonathan Quick was just one second better than the Devils forwards. Even in overtime, the Devils had some great chances.
Games like this, that are so close, where luck plays as much a part as skill, are why the hockey playoffs run best of seven. It helps even out the skill and luck.
Still, the Devils are now headed to LA down two games to none, and the Kings are playing great hockey.

WHL Hockey: Seattle vs Spokane

08 Jan

We had a good time last night as we watched the Seattle Thunderbirds take on the Spokane Chiefs. The T-Birds started off strong, but then there was a fight and a penalty on Seattle, and it just changed the whole momentum of the game. After that, Spokane scored 3 goals in the first period. Seattle wasn’t able to come back, even though they played much better hockey the rest of the game- except for the power play. Their power play was awful. They did not score a single time while on the power play, but did get scored on. Sad.

Jagr back in PA

02 Jul

Jaromir Jagr is back in Pennsylvania, but not in the black and gold of the Penguins. No, instead he’s going to be wearing the orange of the Flyers. The Flyers?

Okay, so if you’re not a hockey fan, you probably don’t know or care who Jagr is. You certainly don’t care that he’s signed a one year deal with Philly. But for those of us who are fans, even if we’re not fans ofPittsburgh, there’s just something wrong here.

And I know, Gretzsky left the Oilers for the Kings and all, but this is the same state. Same state!

Bonus Hockey Content: Lord Stanley’s Cup

16 Jun

The Bruins deserved Lord Stanley’s Cup. And Tim Thomas most definitely deserved the Conn Smythe. It was a hard fought series, and yes, Canucks fans were disappointed not to win their first Cup, but the Bruins outplayed them, plain and simple.

And losing a game, no matter how big, is not a reason to riot. Very few people actually participated in destructive behavior, but our 5 minutes of fame society meant that a lot of people were trying to get pictures, and ignored police requests to clear the area, increasing the risk, even if they weren’t technically doing anything wrong.

Canucks Win

27 Apr

I know they were playing the defending Stanley Cup champions, and I know they have had a hard time beatingChicago, especially in the playoffs, but this was supposed to be easier for the Canucks. They were the number one seed in the west going in to the playoffs, playing the number eight seed. They won the first three games easily. But game six went into overtime and the Hawks tied the series at 3 each. It was 1-0 Canucks until minutes before the end of the game. Luckily, sudden death overtime in game 7, the Canucks pulled it out.

In Honor of My Brother’s Birthday – Stanley Cup Playoffs

20 Apr

Last night, the Vancouver Canucks had the chance to sweep the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Chicago Blackhawks, out of the first round of the playoffs. They failed- miserably. After winning three straight, the Canucks lost, 7-2, and for that last point, the Hawks weren’t trying to defend.

With the series lopsided in one direction, and the game lopsided in another, the final period was an exercise in what do we call/ don’t we call for the refs.

Tonight, my brother’s favorite team, the Detroit Redwings also have the chance to sweep. Will they have better luck than the Canucks?

New Jersey Devils (2)

08 Feb

I haven’t talked a lot about hockey this season because my Devil’s have been terrible. After granting Kovalchuk a CBA altering contract, the team lost for the first half of the season. In fact, it looks like they might miss the post season for the first time in 14 years, since I became a fan.

In this second half, they’ve started picking up and are on a winning streak, but I think its too little, too late.

Luckily, I have a secondary team, the regional Vancouver Canucks to cheer for, too, and they are at the top of the heap.
