Respect for Marriage Act

21 Jul

Respect for Marriage. I like that. Because really, did marriage ever actually need defending? When people are willing to fight for the right to marry, I’m pretty certain marriage is in good shape.

Diane Feinstein has cred on this issue. She was one of only 14 Senators  who voted against DOMA to begin with. And, now, unsurprisingly, she’s the one to sponsor the bill to repeal DOMA.

Thank you, Senator, for the respect you’ve shown on this issue.

The fact that Obama is endorsing the Respect for Marriage Act is the icing, but you’re the baker.

Equal means equal, always.

Google+

20 Jul

It’s apparently the time of trying new things here. In addition to switching to Google docs for the writing I do on my laptop and preparing to dump cable, I’ve also created a Google+ account. I won’t dump FaceBook, but I like some of the features of Google+.

My only real problem is that Google+ won’t allow a gmail address to be a secondary address on your account. That means I can’t combine my personal account (with my 15+ year old hotmail account) to my blogging account. Maybe this will require me to create a unique blogging Google+ account. Pondering.

No More Cable

19 Jul

We’re considering giving up cable television. I should rephrase- we’ve decided to give up cable television (once I get through the shows saved on our DVR) and not replacing it with anything, except, perhaps, Hulu Plus.

Between Hulu’s paid service, Netflix streaming, and the cable websites themselves, we think we might not miss out on anything. Well, with one exception- I have yet to find full episodes of the current Mythbusters season online. And that’s honestly a pretty big deal for us.

But our Comcast bill is $150/month. That could drop to $20-30 with just internet. Wouldn’t that be nice.

A New Word Processor

18 Jul

I removed Open Office from my laptop because it’s just too big for the processing power of my $300, three year old, barely meets the specs for its Vista OS laptop. But that means that I need to find a new way to work on my fiction when I go to critique group. So, I’m giving Google docs a try.

This morning was the first time I’d gotten into Google docs since I uploaded the pieces there. After some confusion about which account they were in and then a computer crash, I was able to view and edit my documents.

Discipline

17 Jul

It’s summer, the time of goofing off, relaxing, and not keeping to any set schedule. I can use that excuse right?
I need more discipline. I should write more. I should exercise more. I should clean more.
Okay, only one of those things actually sounds like fun- writing. And yet…
In conversation with the June winner at Fiction in 50, he asked me why I don’t submit a piece each week. I used the 3 other blogs as an excuse, but truth is, I have time to write 50 words a week. I just need the discipline to do so.

Supernatural

16 Jul

Clearing out our DVR in anticipation of switching or cancelling television service, I watched 3 of the last 6 episodes of Supernatural last night. I love this show and have forever, but to be honest, plot wise, it probably should have ended if a few seasons ago, or at least last season. I mean, what do you do after preventing the apocalypse. It’s hard to ramp up from there.

At the same time, I’m happy it’s still on. I don’t care how cheesy the metaplot, they are clearly still having fun making this show, and I’m having fun watching it.

How do you decide?

15 Jul

Is it worth it?

For many people, money, which seems so concrete in its value, does not really hold value in and of itself. That can get them in financial trouble if they don’t have another way to value goods and services.

This thread talks about the system on person used after filing bankruptcy to determine whether something was worth it or not. In his case, he used his time- is this worth working X number of hours?

Other people use favorite goods- is this worth 5 cases of beer?

Whatever system you use, it’s a way of assigning value.

Game Review: Gardens of Time

14 Jul

I have mentioned my love of casual games before, especially my addiction to all forms of Bejeweled. I also happen to love hidden picture games, and while I have never bought one, I download the free demos all the time. Just like it has Bejeweled Blitz, Facebook now has hidden picture games. There are two. Only Gardens of Time is worth playing.

It combines game play (hidden pictures), building your own garden, a need for friends, progression, and achievements- pretty much everything you need for a successful Facebook game. Definitely something to check out if you like hidden picture games.

Rock Band

13 Jul

We recently bought Rock Band 3. We’ve been enjoying it so much, we bought the keyboard for it. Now I have to wait for it to arrive via UPS. But I am very excited. I figure I may even be able to play on hard on keyboard, since I actually know how to play a keyboard.

We also ordered Lego Rock Band, and I’m excited for that to arrive, too. Tons of great songs (including The Final Countdown by Europe). Almost all of our entertainment dollars this summer have gone to Rock Band. I’m not complaining. It’s entertainment that lasts.

Rat City Rollergirls Championship Bout

12 Jul

The Rat City Rollergirls Championship bout was this weekend. The Grudge Match (DLF v Sockit Wenches) and the championship (Throttle Rockets v Grave Danger) were exciting, hard-fought bouts. As a Throttle Rockets fan, it was hard to see them lose. Being married to a DLF fan made their first win in 2 years more exciting.

The big news though, was the people leaving. Drew Blood, the SW coach is moving away, and two long-time, favorite skaters- X-Khan of SW and Valtron of TR retired.

I will miss seeing them on the flat track. Best of luck to all of them.
