Sunday Mornings

26 Feb

Besides my critique group, one of the things I love about getting up every other Sunday to come to critique is the chance to see Seattle wake up. Sitting in a Starbucks in SoDo, there’s a very diverse crowd. From the occasional take over from ravers to tailgaters during the football season, from the homeless to people meeting a real estate agent to fill out paperwork, from cops to yuppies, they all need their morning caffeine.
I often wonder how different this place is on weekdays. What’s the crowd like then? Do any of the Monday people spend hours here?

Seeing Beauty

09 Feb

I sometimes forget what a beautiful place I live in. Especially during the winter, the skies are so cloudy and the days are so short that it’s easy to spend very little time outside, even with the dogs wanting to go out, when it’s wet, we rarely do.

With the exception of the “snowpocalypse”, we’ve had a fairly mild winter this year- not a lot of rain, more blue skies than you would expect. The days are still short enough that we don’t get out with the dogs much- it’s dark before we’re home. But the world is still beautiful.

The Rain is Here

01 Feb

Winter has arrived inSeattle. I am not talking about the snow a couple weeks ago, though that does happen roughly every two years. I’m talking about the rain- the weather we normally associate withSeattlewinter. Up until the January storm, it had been a relatively mild and dry winter.

This week, the rain has hit. And I am kind of glad, despite the fact that one of my dogs doesn’t want to go outside. We had work done in the basement last spring to prevent future flooding. I would really like enough rain to see if it worked.

Why the Hate?

06 Mar

I like it when companies take pride in their product and where they’re from. That’s a good way to sell me something, or at least earn my goodwill toward your company, even if I’m never going to be your target audience. In that sense, I’m predisposed to liking the Cadillac commercials celebrating their Detroit heritage.

But being proud of yourself does not mean you have to hate on other places. I understand saying your not one of the “famous” cities- New York, Chicago, but the line “and we’re certainly no one’s Emerald City”- why the hate on Seattle? Not needed.

Snowpocalypse 2010 (part 1)

23 Nov

Roughly every two years, it snows in Seattle. And yet, Seattle is never prepared. The worst thing about snow is people who so over react that by trying to drive “safely” they are actually the most dangerous person on the road. Take the lady who stopped at the end of the freeway on ramp (no meter), backing up 4 cars, then got on the freeway going 30. The visibility was better than on most rainiy days and the roads were wet but not slick. Still, it wouldn’t have been so bad if she at least had had her headlights on.
