Why Abortion Must Remain Legal

20 Aug

I am Pro-Choice. I would love to see an entire world where abortion is legal, safe and rare. But before we can get to the rare part, we absolutely must focus on the legal and safe parts.

This week in the Dominican Republic, a 16 year old girl died of cancer because doctors at first refused to give her treatment on the off chance it would terminate her pregnancy. Their Constitution says the right to life is inviolable from conception until death. But apparently, the right to life is only inviolable for fetuses, and not for the women carrying them.

Religion vs Women

17 Feb

Since when is religious freedom the trump card of all the rights granted us in the Constitution? Since when does your religious freedom mean more than my religious freedom? Since when does your religious freedom outweigh my sovereignty over my own body?

Since when, in the name of information, do you get to rape me? (Vaginally probing women without regard for whether or not they consent is rape.) Since when am I too stupid to understand what I’m doing?

Oh, wait, in your mind, I’m female. I have always been too stupid. Why do you even allow us to vote?

In South Dakota

30 Mar

In South Dakota, there’s a 48 hour waiting period before purchasing a handgun. No permit is required. Police record who buys the gun.

In South Dakota, there’s a 72 hour waiting period before receiving an abortion. Anti-abortion counseling is required before the waiting period starts. Religious groups, who are not bound by privacy laws, record all the women who come in for counseling.

I’m not against real counseling, but it should be done by healthcare professionals who are bound to protect their patients’ personal information. And I don’t think it should be easier to obtain a gun than an abortion.

South Dakota Says Its Okay to Murder Medical Personnel

19 Feb

Self defense laws already give us the right to kill to protect ourselves and our loved ones in cases of imminent danger.

So the purpose of this new South Dakota law? To give my brother the right to kill the MD who will provide my abortion, my ex the right to kill a volunteer at a clinic. That’s it.

Until we find a way for men to be pregnant, for their health to be at risk, they should have no say in whether or not I get an abortion. And they certainly shouldn’t have the right to kill medical providers.

Being a Feminist (3)

I don’t consider abortion to be the line in the sand for feminism because I accept that some people honestly believe its murder. I don’t feel that way, but I can understand why they do. Government does not have the right to legislate morality, but this is one area where legality and morality form a gray area.

Like Hillary Clinton, I believe abortion should be safe, legal, and rare. I never want to tell a woman she has to maintain a pregnancy that might kill her or that she has to carry a non-viable fetus to term. That is immoral.

Being a Feminist (1)

I used to be one of those women who would say “I’m not a feminist, but…” At the time, I believed it, thought “feminist” was a dirty word.. But the truth is, I am a raging, flaming feminist. I am not one of those who believes the line is drawn at abortion (though I support legal abortion), but instead at access to birth control and giving all women the education they need to maintain control over their own bodies. I don’t believe women who want to limit those choices for other women care about women at all. Education is key.
