So Glad Today is Tuesday

20 Sep

Monday was a Monday. I’d been off work since last Tuesday, came in late and had a meeting to go to after I tried to catch up on all emails. I came home find out our Chevy didn’t come with a jag or a lug wrench. The VW’s jack worked, but its lug wrench would not fit. So we called roadside assistance who changed the tire for us and then we took it to Les Schwab and got a new tire.

After that, our beagle spent an hour running around through some blackberries.

I was so happy for new TV.

Book Review: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

19 Sep

This is the most basic of stories, a family drama, told from the point of view of the most biased observer- the family dog. It is a really well done story, and the short sentences and chapters make it a very quick read, a nice way to spend a rainy Seattle afternoon.

My only issue with the book (and this may be a “me” issue, as I seem to have it often) is the final chapter, which was more of an epilogue. It was too much a perfect dream ending to a book that had been very based in reality.

Great Live Performances: BOWI @ A Terrible Beauty

18 Sep

We normally only catch BOWI at the Faire. But they are a local band (and we even have a friend in common) so we made an effort to go see them at a pub that is quite near us.

The pub performance is superior for one main reason- instead of doing one 30-40 minute set, they do four 40-45 minute sets. We stayed for two of them, but then it was a little late for us, so we headed home.

We will be back. BOWI was great, and A Terrible Beauty, the pub they played at, was a nice venue.

Electrical Work

17 Sep

My father is visiting, and he and my husband have been doing all sorts of electrical work around our house. They have rewired the garage to give us actual outlets so we do not have to run extension cords everywhere. They have replaced the awful recessed lighting in the family room with pretty dome lights. They fixed the switch in the kitchen so we do not have to jiggle it to get the light on, and they have added a second light fixture on our stairs so that the whole stairwell has light.

There may even be more to come.

Cooking

16 Sep

I am not the cook in the family. Still, there are some basic meals that I make. These are simple, comfort food type things- like cream of beef (aka chipped beef or Army SOS). When I make dinner, I follow the recipe. I don’t vary from it, except to maybe add more of the flavors I like.

Tonight, though, I made cream of beef but we were out of Worcestershire sauce. Instead I used a bit of soy sauce and some onion soup mix to help flavor my meat. And while it tasted a little different, it was still good.

Yesterday’s Weather

15 Sep

I excel at dressing for yesterday’s weather.

I do not check weather reports except when I’m traveling. On a normal day, I get up and dress appropriately for the weather we had the day before. Most of the time, this results in no issues. But sometimes the weather changes drastically enough that I look very out of place. For example, one day the weather is sunny and hot (almost 90- inSeattle). So the next day, I dress in capris, sandles, and a light weight top. But a cold front moved in, and temps aren’t even expected to reach 70.

Want to discover new planets?

14 Sep

If you’re an astronomer, especially one who’s interested in finding new planets, Chile is apparently the place to be. Astronomers in Chile just announced the discovery of 50 new planets, one of them a possible super-Earth (no idea what makes it super). In fact, this same telescope in Chile is responsible for the discovery of the both the possible super-Earths. Talk about a cool place to work.

However, it looks like Europe will soon be the place to be, once the European Extremely Large Telescope (great name) if built. The new super-Earth will be a prime target for the telescope.

Meta Post

13 Sep

On Saturday night, as I was falling in to bed at 12:30am (technically not Saturday anymore), I realized that I had never put up a post for that day. I felt bad, but mostly tired, very tired.

On Sunday, at critique group, I mentioned I was considering changing this from a 7 day a week blog to a week day only set up. The non-verbal reactions of my group quickly brought home the point that that would be a bad idea.

So we will remain at 7 days a week. And I will try not to miss any more days.

Book Review: The Dragon Waiting by John M Ford

12 Sep

I love John M Ford’s writing. He has a distinctive style, especially in his earlier novels, of telling stories from multiple people’s viewpoints. He takes each individual’s story and wraps the whole narrative together, often skipping large amounts of time and leaving the reader to piece together what happened.

This can be a very successful and rewarding (for the reader) style. Not so much in The Dragon Waiting. I had a hard time figuring out some of the background or understanding why I cared about the outcome. Not one I’ll be recommending (unlike The Last Hot Time which is fabulous).

Where were you?

11 Sep

Ten years ago today, I had been in Seattle for just over a week. I had two interviews scheduled. I woke up that morning to confused radio show hosts. They kept saying something about September 11 being 9/11 which is 911, our emergency number, so maybe that’s why this was happening. I didn’t know what “this” was. They never could seem to say. I went to my first interview.
It wasn’t until I saw the television in the lobby of that company on the way  out after the interview that I had any real idea of what had happened.
