Friends and Food

21 Apr

No Mythbusters entry until later this evening. Last night I went out and had a wonderful dinner with an amazing group of friends. We talked about dogs and books and computer games and food.

We took part in Seattle Restaurant Week (which this spring lasts 2 weeks), so we were able to go to a fancy restaurant, order off a special menu and pay a lower price than usual. Of course, we were at a fondue place and they don’t have the cheese fondue on their special menu, so we paid a little extra a got some of that to.

In Honor of My Brother’s Birthday – Stanley Cup Playoffs

20 Apr

Last night, the Vancouver Canucks had the chance to sweep the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Chicago Blackhawks, out of the first round of the playoffs. They failed- miserably. After winning three straight, the Canucks lost, 7-2, and for that last point, the Hawks weren’t trying to defend.

With the series lopsided in one direction, and the game lopsided in another, the final period was an exercise in what do we call/ don’t we call for the refs.

Tonight, my brother’s favorite team, the Detroit Redwings also have the chance to sweep. Will they have better luck than the Canucks?

HIV Prevention Drug Trials Halted in Africa

19 Apr

A major trial of a pill meant to help prevent HIV infection has been halted. Given how rarely drug trials are truly successful, this news isn’t surprising, but it is sad.

Women inAfricararely have options when it comes to protecting themselves from the virus. This pill was hope that they could finally exert some control over their health and the health of their children to be. Sadly, the results show it isn’t working. The women given the real drug and the women given the dummy pill are being infected at the same rate.

On to the next study.

Next Great American Restaurant (6)

18 Apr

My two favorite concepts were both in the bottom three. I can feel forSpiceCoastbecause he’s right, it’s not meant as kid cuisine, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I think that a fast casual restaurant that doesn’t cater to 6 year olds can succeed. Your lunch rush isn’t families, it’s professionals.

I also appreciated that Bobby Flay admitted that he would make something like Soul Daddy’s entrée for his kids, and make it in a way that was less healthy. This is soul food. No one coming to this restaurant is looking for a low calorie meal.

Rat City Rollergirls, Season 7, Bout 4

17 Apr

It was a travel team night with our B team taking on the B team from the Denver Roller Dolls, and our All-Stars taking on the Bay Area Derby Girls.Denverowned Rain of Terror, though the second half was better.

The BAD Girls came out to a good start againstRatCity. It seemed closer than the score said at the end of the first half, with Bay Area leading by 30. The second halfRatCitycame back strong and took back the lead. However, Bay Area really played good defense and won by bout by 6 points.

Why I like Top Chef Masters

16 Apr

One of the problems with this blog is that it gives lie to my idea of myself that I don’t watch reality television.

My favorite shows are the ones where people are competing for charity (with the exception of the first Next Iron Chef, where the talent level was just so high). I don’t know if its because people aren’t competing for themselves or if its because they’re already rich/famous, but either way, contestants are nicer to each other, more supportive, and that just makes it more enjoyable for me to watch. I like it when people respect each other.

Student Loan Debt

15 Apr

Student loan debt has been in the news again. The reality of college is changing. More and more employers expect a college degree, even for entry level jobs, and colleges are becoming more and more expensive. It is becoming less and less possible for students to pay their own way through school working part time and getting federal aid. It creates this space for private lenders to mortgage the future of the next generation.

And this wouldn’t be YM if there weren’t at least a couple mentions that loans are okay for Pharmacy school, but not for an English degree.

Mythbusters (ep 161)

All I have to say about “blue ice” is that if enough is going mechanically wrong on a plane for some to fall, the airline is actually going to have more worries than the off chance that the blue ice kills someone or causes significant property damage.

Methane and fire do not mix. Even if you do not get the Bourne explosion, the combo melts your house. MELTS YOUR HOUSE. The methane made everything flammable. The flowers didn’t so much turn to ash as melt. It looked like a scene out of Backdraft. Definitely DO NOT try this at home.

Life happens when its the most inconvenient

I had a plan for this week, a very good plan. Then the work in the basement took a day longer to complete, and there was an error in the verification of our taxes, so those took a day longer to submit.

In addition, we had an appointment scheduled for the car to get an oil change on Thursday, because I need to do some running around for work today. But on Tuesday night, the check engine light came on. So now the car is going in to the shop today, and I’ll be getting a loaner from the dealership.

Mythbusters on Colbert

12 Apr

Mythbusters on Colbert! I loved this interview because it reminded me of something I noticed when we saw Mythbusters Live- Jamie doesn’t like to talk, or Adam just likes to talk so much more. Except for the brief bit about his dog getting confused by the MI masks, Jamie didn’t talk. It was all Adam.

I am kind of hoping they’ll use that footage of Jamie’s dog, though, and do a myth about how dogs recognize people. Those of us who’ve had a dog go blind know how much they use their eyes, but most people think its all scent.
