Soul Daddy’s wins! Now, the real question is, when can I expect a restaurant to open in Seattle? I love soul food. (Please let there be hushpuppies…) Since this was my favorite concept from the beginning, I am thrilled.

I think Sudhir should take this experience and go get a business loan to open Spice Coast. He has a great track record of starting businesses, and by going deep on this show, proves to investors and/or banks that he has the experience and skills necessary to succeed.

Joey needs to go open a family style meatball restaurant and be happy.

We Interrupt Your Regularly Scheduled Posts…

I was all set to watch the season finale of American’s Next Great Restaurant last night, but was unable to. Our regularly scheduled programming was interrupted with breaking news- Osama bin Laden was dead, and his body was inUScustody.

I’m not certain I agree with the commentator’s comment that this is the most important moment in the current Presidential term. I still think passing health care reform was pretty major. But this is the moment that pretty much guarantees Obama a second term. The timing, with scheduled troop withdrawals and movement in his cabinet, turned out pretty perfect.

My two favorites are in the final three. At this point, I’m betting on Soul Daddy’s (and am wondering how quickly one will come to the Seattle area).  His food has been really popular; he’s made strides toward making the food healthier, and he got employees who also seemed to really like his food.

Of course, I won’t be sad if its Spice Coast, either. I’m all for fast casual Indian food. Give me a mango milkshake (probably a mango lassi) any day.

I will be mad if Brooklyn Meatball company wins. Joey annoys me and the food isn’t consistent.

I was sad, if not surprised, to see Sandy go home. I would have rather seen Joey go, but she wasn’t going to win, so it didn’t matter much.

Sandy was hampered by her concept. Each week, when everyone else only had to create, make, and serve one new dish, Sandy had to make two, a sinner and a saint. The worst part is, I think she vocalized her concept in the most understandable way this evening- I want to give people choices, make it so that everyone can get what they want, decadent or healthy, at the same restaurant.

I wanted Eric to pull himself and Meltworks out before the judges kicked him out. It was very clear that his vision of his concept and the judges’ vision of his concept weren’t in sync.

I was annoyed by Curtis’s comment that if it was such a great concept, why hadn’t someone thrown money at it already. That shows a lack of understanding about reality and how difficult it is for non-celebrity chefs to open a restaurant, even a fast casual one. Heck, even the Chipotle guy had to borrow money from his father, not a bank or other investor.

I was happy to see Alex go home. I agree with Bobby that he was in the wrong competition. His whole “I want to be cool” attitude never seemed quite right for a fast casual restaurant. Fast casual restaurants are for professionals on their lunch break, or to grab a quick dinner on the way home. While there are places to sit in the restaurant, most people expect to take the food to go. For those who do stay, they’re likely to be families. Do you want to bring your kids into a bar setting? Plus, he had bad food.

Before tonight’s episode, I want to list my three favorite restaurant ideas on Next Great American Restaurant. Far and away, number one is Soul Daddy’s. I can tell you right now that I would eat at a fast casual soul food restaurant.

After that is Spice Coast. I live in the land of Indian take-out, but I would happily have another option.

Finally, Sinners & Saints. I love the “Food for your Mood” slogan, and there are definitely times when I want to try a healtheri version of a favorite and others when I want all the decadence there is.

Watching the “Next Great American Restaurant” -the founder of Chipotle and Bobby Flay want to help you open your own chain.

The contestants didn’t do all their homework. They should have watched cooking competitions, even though they aren’t chefs. The first thing you learn is not to argue with the judges when they say your food isn’t good.

Additionally, they needed to do research on venture capital, because that’s what they’re getting here. They needed to learn that passion is good, but you have to make the people who are giving you money happy. Ignoring their concerns equals zero dollars.
