Not So Great Live Performances: Mariachi El Bronx

14 Mar

Mariachi El Bronx was the second opening act for Flogging Molly. They are, in fact, a straight up mariachi band. They even wore traditional mariachi costumes while performing on stage. They had two horn players, one guy who played a number of instruments, depending on the song, two guitar players, a banjo player (who later came out and did a couple songs with Flogging Molly as their banjo player had flown home for the birth of his second child), and the singer.

We found them to be only OK. Or, I should say, we found their front man only ok.

Great Live Performances: The Donots

13 Mar

The Donots were one of the opening acts at the Flogging Molly concert we went to last night. They are from Germany and describe themselves as a punk band. I don’t really know if they are punk or not, they are definitely a rock band (though that phrase is now reserved for a video game). They put on a great high energy show that included the lead singer crowd surfing during their final song- a cover of Twisted Sister’s We’re Not Gonna Take It.

The crowd was definitely into it. We certainly enjoyed the performance and will be following them.

Great Live Performances: Flogging Molly at the Paramount

14 Mar

Last night was our second time seeing Flogging Molly in concert. Let me just that Flogging Molly is one of the few bands that I would travel to see. In fact, if they are going to be playing near me, but not in my city, there’s a good chance I will travel to see them.

The show atSeattle’s Paramount Theater last night was almost 4 hours long, with two hours of that being all Flogging Molly. Their energy was amazing. They played a number of new songs, but also a lot of the old stuff that the crowd loved.

Mumford & Sons and Flogging Molly

28 Jul

We’ve really kind of fallen in love with Mumford & Sons. Given that we’re fans of folk and Irish music, it’s not really surprising. What is surprising to me is how much air play they’re getting on main stream radio and music television.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. They just don’t fit in the mold of most of what seems to be out there right now. Instead, they’re traditional.

Though it does amuse me that Pandora plays a lot of Mumford & Sons on my Flogging Molly station. Apparently Flogging Molly isn’t flagged as punk, only as Irish.

Rock Band

05 Jul

Bought Rock Band 3 for the husband as part of his birthday gift. We’ve been playing it a lot recently and really enjoying ourselves. We’ve downloaded some songs from the network (Flogging Molly and Stroke 9) as well as other songs newly available (Fleetwood Mac). There has been singing and guitar and drum playing. Now at the point we’re considering a keyboard purchase.

My favorite video games have always been cooperative, so I think, that even if the music games are falling out of fashion (as the Game Stop guys claimed), we’ll be playing Rock Band for years to come.

Pandora <3

03 Jul

I know, I’m late to the party. I’m ALWAYS late to the party, at least when it comes to a lot of pop culture. Just this month, I started listening to Pandora. Pandora, which no one has heard of, which was why they just had their IPO…

Anyway, big surprise, I love it.

I’ve created a number of stations, but my two favorites are Flogging Molly station and my Rhianna/Justin Timberlake station. DH has created an Afghan Whigs station that he likes.

I’m happy to have musical variety that is almost all upbeat to get me through the work day.

Great live performances – Flogging Molly

29 Jun

I got us tickets to see Flogging Molly last summer more for Charles than anything else. I knew he liked them, and I didn’t hate their music, but I could not have told you for sure what their music was. We had an amazing time.

Marymoor Park is an amazing venue. They left the area that is sometimes reserved seating open as “dance” floor so that people could get close to the stage. The band had amazing energy that rivaled that of the dancers (or beat it) from beginning to end. I can’t wait until they come this way again.
