High School Poetry

20 Sep

Recently I found the old three ring binder I kept all of my poetry and other writing in during high school. I opened it briefly and noticed that the piece on top was from the summer after my senior year– over 15 years old. I am kind of afraid to read it. I remember a number of my (not exactly good) poems quite well. But the piece on top, I have no memory of, so there’s bound to be a few surprises. I guess I should mostly just look at it with the thought that at least I’ve gotten better.

Currently Watching: Bleach

19 Sep

I enjoy watching anime. Currently, we’re watching Bleach. It is over all a pretty good show, but its very hard to see how one season relates to the others, or even if we should call them seasons.

Watching episode 171, it seems far removed from the last episode we saw (over a month ago, granted). Only the two main characters remain. Of course, I was reminded that when we first started watching this show, there were sentient stuffed animals (not quite, but it is how I think of them) but they have not been seen in quite some time, either.

D&D Encounters: Dark Sun (Final)

18 Sep

Dark Sun has wrapped up. We managed to make all 15 sessions of the 2nd round of Encounters and had a good time doing so. Our DM did make the mistake of telling us that one of the groups in the earlier Encounters session had killed the big boss in the first round. I wouldn’t say we took that as a challenge, but when we realized it might be possible in our encounter, we went for it. Our four man group also killed the main boss in round one, and I never even attacked him. Now, the journey is over.

Watching: Haven

17 Sep

I’m not a Stephen King fan, but we decided to start watching the new SyFy show Haven when it started this summer. So far I am really enjoying it. More than anything it reminds me of early X-Files- there’s a new monster every week and good, though not really romantic, chemistry between the two leads. There is also, I think, a little bit of poking fun at Murder She Wrote- every week in this little town in Maine, there’s a new murder. But in this case, everyone knows that something is wrong. It makes for an enjoyable bit of camp.

Just Finished Reading: Mulengro by Charles deLint

16 Sep

All those reasons I gave for liking to read YA fiction- I like to read Charles deLint for the exact opposite reasons. I read a deLint novel every couple of years. His character arcs are complex and in depth. There’s a depth to everything. It may be hard to put the book down, but you don’t fly through it.

Mulengro is a dark urban fantasy. There are multiple point of view characters, including almost everyone who dies, making the senseless violence feel that much more potent, and putting everyone in danger. The ending is not surprising, but is still powerful.

The Colony (7)

15 Sep

It’s called a moment of recognition, and it is an essential component to a good novel. I realize The Colony is unscripted, but a moment of recognition is what I need to continue caring about these people. Just a moment to realize they aren’t the only ones struggling to survive, that the way to rebuild society is not to attack everyone you see.

But the producers have taken away that possibility. By refusing to give the colonists any positive interactions with strangers, they have taken away the one thing that makes these people human beings, not animals struggling to survive.

Sunday Morning Critique (2)

14 Sep

Sometimes I feel like I should write about my critique group more, but how many ways can you say “I love these people”. My group is full of talented writers and critquers. I learn something new every time we meet.

Even when I don’t have anything to new read, they inspire me. They help me keep on track with what I want to do with my writing. We talk not just about what we’ve written, but the business of writing. They support me while at the same time being honest. I know if they say something is good, it is.

Fantasy Football

13 Sep

For the first year in many years, I don’t have a fantasy football team this year. It’s only the opening week, and I already miss it.

I like the competition amongst friends, and I like that it makes almost all football games more interesting. I rarely see my team play (they most often play at the same time as the home team) and I can’t afford the tv package that would change that. I still follow the home team, but I have come to follow other teams and players, having “owned” those players in previous years. I miss the investment.

My Favorite Season

12 Sep

Fall is my favorite season, just like the waning crescent is my favorite phase of the moon. There’s something calming about the shortening of days, cooler weather, and picking apples from the trees in the yard to make pie. It’s a joy, once again, to have my dogs curled up right next to me, or even on top of me.

The summer is too hot, too bright; winter too cold and dark; spring is full of life and excitement. Fall is peace for me, the reminder that everything comes to an end, and there is a beauty to it all.

Reading YA fiction as an Adult

11 Sep

There’s a different pace to YA fiction. The books shorter, leading the feeling of accomplishment you get when you finish the book, and the story moves at a different pace. The plot is more central to the story, too.

In adult fiction, so much energy is taken up with complicated emotions and motives. When its well done, its really well done and worth the time and effort, but YA fiction has little of that. The emotions are just as real, but the twists and turns are less complicated, more straight forward. It’s a nice sitcom break from hour long dramas.
