What I’m Watching: Supernatural

02 Oct

Geek girl eye candy- that is what this show is- with enough of the real supernatural and urban myths to keep my husband happy. Just like with Michael Weatherly, I fell in love with Jensen Ackles on Dark Angel.

Dean is definitely my favorite character, though in recent seasons, Castiel has been moving up. Misha  Collins definitely adds to the eye candy.

I am a little concerned that they might be trying to do too much this season, with two big bads in the Leviathan and Lucifer. I think the show worked better when the focus was, well, more focused.

What I’m Watching: NCIS

01 Oct

We started watching this in reruns onUSAand ION. There was a year, while we were still catching up, that Tuesdays meant 4-5 hours of NCIS in a row.

I have been in love with Michael Weatherly since Dark Angel. Yes, Mark Harmon is the show, but I don’t think it could last without Tony, either. While Tony is partnered with Cait and later Ziva, he is, in fact, Gibbs’s partner. The show, and the team, would not work without both of them. I am thrilled that in the last few seasons we’ve started going more into Tony’s past.

What I’m Watching: Big Bang Theory

30 Sep

I am a geek. Most of my friends are geeks. That means that if feels like I know everyone in this show. Even though none of us are in academia, every single one of these characters is more relatable to me than anyone on Friends ever was.

Christine Baranski as Leonard’s mom might be my favorite guest starring role on television, and casting Mayim Bialik as Sheldon’s love(?) interest was pure genius on the part of the producers.

It boggles my mind that the man responsible for this show is also responsible for the awful Two and A Half Men.

MythBusters (ep 171)

29 Sep

Welcome back Mythbusters!

My biggest problem with the car vs motorcycle for “greenest” mode of transportation, comes from understanding the California Emissions standards. Cars are subject to them, but motorcycles obviously have different standards. If cars from states that don’t require the stricter CA emissions criteria were used, the results might be very different.

Love that RPGs really only destroy what is in front of them, and that a bullet can set one off, but only if the RPG is already armed. I think if I were in high school today, I might be dreaming of attending New Mexico Tech.

What I’m Watching: Castle

28 Sep

I fell in love with Nathan Fillion on Firefly and Buffy, so naturally when I heard he was getting his own show on regular network television, I knew I would watch. I loved Castle from the beginning because of the cheese. We assumed, though, that it would only last a season. We first realized we were wrong when my mother mentioned she watched the show. Hmmm, maybe there was a chance.

Last Monday marked the start of Castle’s 4th season. The cheese is still there, but the characters have also developed nicely, and there’s great tension between the two leads.

TV without the DVR

27 Sep

When we dumped cable, we got rid of the DVR. Now, I am faced with a new season of television without the ability to watch two shows that are on at the same time. So far, that doesn’t seem like it will be a big deal. What does seem like a big deal- probably no American Idol for me this year and likely little X Factor, as I always preferred to DVR the shows and just watch the performances, skipping the filler and the judges. I think I’ll manage The Voice and The Sing Off , but not the others.

BattleStar Gallactica (new version)

06 Sep

We have started to watch the final season of the new Battlestar Gallactica. We watched all the other seasons as they were happening, or right after the season ended when we could watch them all online at once. But it had gone downhill enough that we just did not care enough to watch the final season.

In a conversation today, Edward James Olmos’s name came up, so we decided to go back and give it a try. So far, it’s not driving me crazy, but it is certainly not the show I remember falling in love with the first season.

Books > TV

31 Aug

One of the (not surprising) benefits of no longer having the deluxe cable package  is that  we’re reading more. We still have some cable, but getting in the habit of not having the TV on means that we don’t turn it on when we’re bored or for background noise.
Instead, we play music and pick up a book. I’ve read two complete books in the last week and have started on another.
I’m enjoying the having the TV off. Somehow, it makes the day seem slower paced, more relaxing, when I pick up a book instead of flipping through channels.

The Joy of Painting

27 Jul

This may seem silly, but I love that The Best of The Joy of Painting still plays on our local public television station. There’s just something about Bob Ross’s voice that’s incredibly relaxing after a stressful day.

I can just lay back and watch him paint happy trees, or talk about how he always forgets to put chimneys on cabins and viewers write in to say the people in those cabins must be freezing. And it all seems so easy, like I could do it.

It was a zen experience when I was 15. 20 years later, it still is.

No More Cable

19 Jul

We’re considering giving up cable television. I should rephrase- we’ve decided to give up cable television (once I get through the shows saved on our DVR) and not replacing it with anything, except, perhaps, Hulu Plus.

Between Hulu’s paid service, Netflix streaming, and the cable websites themselves, we think we might not miss out on anything. Well, with one exception- I have yet to find full episodes of the current Mythbusters season online. And that’s honestly a pretty big deal for us.

But our Comcast bill is $150/month. That could drop to $20-30 with just internet. Wouldn’t that be nice.
