WarHammer Quest

Started playing WarHammer Quest in RPG mode. This allows the hubby, our friend, and I to play essentially without a GM. There’s not a whole lot of role playing; it’s definitely a dungeon crawl, but that’s okay for right now. It’s still fun, though we’re definitely a pragmatic party, not an idealistic one.

Tonight, we went through all the event cards on our way back to the portcullis that blocked off half the dungeon and the final room. We did get the key, but instead of going to complete our mission, we said forget it and headed in to town.

Game Review: Hibernia

My husband went to GenCon a few weeks ago to help run a booth and demo games for Sandstorm Productions, LLC. He came back with a copy ofHibernia.

We played with three players (4 is apparently recommended), and it was fun. It requires some simple strategy- so appropriate for kids starting at around 10. It doesn’t take a whole lot of time- less than a game of Monopoly- probably on par with the average time a game of Dominion takes.

And for around $20, it’s a good deal.

Look for the game in stores by the end of September.

On Winning and Losing

Every once in a while, I am reminded why it is important that I’m not that competitive when it comes to board games. (I am competitive about other things, but not board games.) This is good because my husband is very competitive, is not a gracious loser, and is only marginally a good winner. The same goes for other friends to whom winning (or not losing) is equally important.

Being okay with losing the majority of the time means that I can still enjoy the games, even when playing with people who are much less casual about it than me.

I have mentioned my love of casual games before, especially my addiction to all forms of Bejeweled. I also happen to love hidden picture games, and while I have never bought one, I download the free demos all the time. Just like it has Bejeweled Blitz, Facebook now has hidden picture games. There are two. Only Gardens of Time is worth playing.

It combines game play (hidden pictures), building your own garden, a need for friends, progression, and achievements- pretty much everything you need for a successful Facebook game. Definitely something to check out if you like hidden picture games.

Rock Band

We recently bought Rock Band 3. We’ve been enjoying it so much, we bought the keyboard for it. Now I have to wait for it to arrive via UPS. But I am very excited. I figure I may even be able to play on hard on keyboard, since I actually know how to play a keyboard.

We also ordered Lego Rock Band, and I’m excited for that to arrive, too. Tons of great songs (including The Final Countdown by Europe). Almost all of our entertainment dollars this summer have gone to Rock Band. I’m not complaining. It’s entertainment that lasts.

Bought Rock Band 3 for the husband as part of his birthday gift. We’ve been playing it a lot recently and really enjoying ourselves. We’ve downloaded some songs from the network (Flogging Molly and Stroke 9) as well as other songs newly available (Fleetwood Mac). There has been singing and guitar and drum playing. Now at the point we’re considering a keyboard purchase.

My favorite video games have always been cooperative, so I think, that even if the music games are falling out of fashion (as the Game Stop guys claimed), we’ll be playing Rock Band for years to come.

Game Review: Once Upon a Time…

I’ve owned Once Upon a Time… for a few years now, but didn’t get around to playing it until recently. And while it is a game, so someone does win, winning is secondary to game play.

Each player has 7 cards with fairy tale elements on them, and one or two cards with endings. The goal is to tell a story that uses all your elements and leads to one of your Happily Ever Afters. Other players have cards that will let them interrupt and take over the story, steering it toward their endings, creating a convoluted (but fun) tale.

Board Game: Puerto Rico

We recently bought the board gamePuerto Rico. We had played it before at a friend’s house and I really enjoyed it. So, we picked it up when a local game store was having a sale. Before I had always played it with 4-5 players. We have mostly played with 3 players since buying it.Puerto Ricois a very different game with 3 players. This was really brought home to me last night when we played 5 player again.

I don’t know that I would say the strategy is different, but that with three players the strategy is delayed.

I remember enjoying playing with my brother’s toy trains as much as he did. As an adult, I still like trains. However, because I don’t have any children to give me the excuse of owning toy trains, I play Sid Meier’s Railroads.

Sometimes I play it as just a train table, trying to meet all the goals. Other times I play vs. computer generated opponents. (I don’t do the multi-player.) Either way, its usually a good way to spend an hour or two.

I tried some mods, but with the exception of the official Holiday scenario, they weren’t well programmed.

 

Bejeweled 3

I’ve mentioned my Bejeweled addiction before. This weekend I bought Bejeweled 3. There’s a Poker mode! And a Quest section (I’ve completed all quests.) There are 6 other modes- normal, zen, lightening, ice storm, butterflies, and diamond mine. The Poker mode and Quest sections are my favorite. I like the Quest because it’s a bunch of mini-games based on all the available modes (and some that aren’t.)

I normally don’t pay for games I can play for free, but my Bejeweled addition is strong. Plus, my husband will play it when I’m not home, so we’ll get our money’s worth.
