Being Thankful 2011

24 Nov

Today I am thankful for the home I have made with my loving husband. I am thankful for our friends, also known as the family we choose, who bless our home with their presence. I am thankful for the food we have to share and the memories we create.

Life sometimes moves too fast, and it’s nice to slow down every once in a while and look around, to take a moment to smell the roses, as it were.

I said it last year, and I’ll say it again. 100 words isn’t really enough, but it will have to do.

Scan This!

20 Nov

Joined the National Consumer Panel- we’re like a Nielsen home, but instead of TV, it’s for what we buy. There’s a bit more work to it than I originally anticipated, but it’s still not too bad. We’ll see if the rewards being worth the work involved.

The biggest problem is that the scanner wants to transmit information late on Saturday nights, and it beeps when it does so. Considering it’s in our room, it wakes us up, resulting in the scanner being shoved in a drawer. Then I have to remember to pull it out and transmit manually on Sunday.

National Consumer Panel

We’re a Nielsen family. Not for TV, they wouldn’t want us for TV. We are a Nielsen family for groceries. I signed up and on Friday we received our scanner. Now, every time we shop, I need to scan in our purchases, put in what we paid, and then the little scanner transmits the data back to Nielsen. I think we might officially be part of the consumer price index…

In exchange, we’ll qualify for gift cards and special promotions (hopefully on items we buy).

It’s cool, though C thinks it’s creepy as the scanner plugs right into our router.

Cooking

16 Sep

I am not the cook in the family. Still, there are some basic meals that I make. These are simple, comfort food type things- like cream of beef (aka chipped beef or Army SOS). When I make dinner, I follow the recipe. I don’t vary from it, except to maybe add more of the flavors I like.

Tonight, though, I made cream of beef but we were out of Worcestershire sauce. Instead I used a bit of soy sauce and some onion soup mix to help flavor my meat. And while it tasted a little different, it was still good.

Meat Coma

21 Aug

We finally had the opportunity to eat at a Brazilian Steak House. This was a little difficult for me because my braces make it hard to eat anything that requires being chewed by the molars. Luckily, the pieces were in general cut thin enough that there were only three things I ended up not being able to eat.

The chicken was amazing. The cinnamon pineapple superb. And the fried plantains? Like being transported back to my Nana’s banana pudding. Talk about delicious.

Oh, and while it never occurred to me to sugar grapes, sugared grapes make a pretty great desert.

Too Much of a Good Thing

18 Aug

Our favorite restaurant has bottomless cups of chai. This is a good thing, most of the time.

We usually eat lunch there, so that the caffeine has time to wear off before bed. This week, we met friends for dinner. And then had amazing drink service.

What I mean by that is that our chai glasses were often being topped off after only one or two drinks. We have no idea how much chai we actually drank.

Yes, we do. Too much. Caffeine normally doesn’t have much effect on me, yet it took me over three hours to fall asleep.

I LIKE Green Beans

11 Aug

I just happen to be incredibly picky about them.

Both my parents are shaking their heads in disbelief. I hate green beans. Hate them. I still get a gag reflex when I try and eat them. Or, that’s the case when I try and eat canned or frozen green beans, and don’t even get me started on French cut.

But, as it turns out, its not that I don’t like green beans. Fresh, steamed green beans are really good. A lot of Thai basil dishes come with the fresh, crispy steamed green beans and I really like them. So there.

Sunday evenings

13 Jun

Only one Game of Thrones episode left in the season, and I’m kind of sad.  Not sad that I  won’t be sad from the depressingness of the show on Sunday evenings, but sad that our little end of weekend ritual with friends will be ending.

I’ve been really enjoying ending my weekend hanging out with people I care about, having dinner and talking. The show ended up being secondary to the event, at least for me. Maybe we can think of a way to continue the low key and relaxed get together, whether or not there’s something on the television

Next Great American Restaurant (8)

03 May

Soul Daddy’s wins! Now, the real question is, when can I expect a restaurant to open in Seattle? I love soul food. (Please let there be hushpuppies…) Since this was my favorite concept from the beginning, I am thrilled.

I think Sudhir should take this experience and go get a business loan to open Spice Coast. He has a great track record of starting businesses, and by going deep on this show, proves to investors and/or banks that he has the experience and skills necessary to succeed.

Joey needs to go open a family style meatball restaurant and be happy.

Ode to a Quiet Saturday

01 May

Every once in a while, its nice to have a quiet day. Yesterday we did laundry and dishes, changed the light fixture in our room. We only left the house to take the dogs to the dog park.  Dinner was simple pot stickers and rice, and the evening ended watching the anime series Fruit’s Basket.

It was just one of those days that we really needed to wind down, after a couple weeks of being really social and having places to be.

And, there is nothing that makes me smile at the end of a day more than sleeping puppies.
