Your Money Friday: Company Charity Drives

05 Oct

It’s that time of year again, the time when charities really ramp up their efforts to get people to donate. For some people, it’s not enough just to know which charities they personally support and are willing to give money to- their companies also have charities they partner with. The question for insensitive me is, will individual people be sending aid to Japan? The quake was huge- 8.9. But Japan has modern infrastructure. The quake has left hundreds dead- hundreds, not thousands. Can you imagine what this would have done to a coastal area of China?

At the same time, this is likely to be the most expensive natural disaster in history. The costs to repair will be huge. So will there be an outpouring of aid via the Red Cross? Will we text to donate $5. Or do we decide Japan can afford to care for its own?

It feels wrong to have a pet peeve against any kind of charitable giving, but I do. I have no problem with companies who advertise how much they have donated. I have no problems with the “for each purchase we’ll donate” programs. Its when the two are combined that I get annoyed. For each purchase we’ll donate $X (up to $XXX).

Here’s the thing, if you have a limited budget of $XXX to donate, donate it. But if you’re asking me to purchase (or do) something in order to “earn” the donation of $X, don’t put a limit on it.
