So glad we did not pay to see Avatar in the theater. I know the movie is pretty and that there were supposedly ground breaking special effects, but really how did this movie get nominated for best picture? The plot came from a random modern pulp generator and the script… I’m not certain I have (good) words for the script. But then, the script did not seem to have (good) words either.
And now I am extra annoyed that James Cameron would not let them use Avatar in the title of “The Last Airbender” movie – which I want to see.

I would just like to say that I agree 110%. It did generate some thought about what we're really doing to the planet (mostly the line where they're like, "The humans killed their mother, and we can't let it happen here," or whatever, because, well… Yeah), and I would like a pretty flying birdy dinosaur thing, but… Unobtanium? Really? They couldn't come up with anything more creative than unobtanium for the unobtainable metal? And they put about the same thought into character development–everyone was so cliche and one-sided.
I'm extremely peeved they took Aang's title away from him. I'm seeing the real "Avatar" the second it comes out, haha. Which will be, like, right after I get back from Japan. W00t! By the way, I like these little blogs, and I'll try to keep an eye on them. Hey, look, a subscription button. Hooray! ^^
…If you didn't see Avatar on the Big Screen in 3D then you have no idea how incredible the Special Effects where, the words immersive and seamless come to mind. As for best picture when they granted it to Shakespeare in Love they opened the door to anything.
My problems with Avatar had nothing to do with the visual – even not in 3D (it was on a big screen – my friends have a projection TV) it was an absolutely beautiful movie. I think I would have enjoyed it more as a silent movie. It was the script that was bad.
Oh, and I agree, Shakespeare in Love was a great romantic comedy, but it also wasn't best picture material.
