MythBusters (ep 149)

14 Oct

We were back to old school MythBusters tonight, just Jamie and Adam and a couple small builds. It was nice to see their joy and the simplicity that made me fall in love with the series again.

I did see a couple problems with their final personal tornado protection tent. It lost its “wing” for the second round of tests, having to bolt the spiked piece to the frame made it less portable, less adjustable (for changing wind speeds), and the whole thing seemed to take a long time to set up. I’d want something a little quicker to deploy.

MythBusters (ep. 148)

07 Oct

We interrupt late roller derby posts for a timely entry about the season premier of MythBusters. This will be a weekly feature. We start this season of one of my favorite TV shows, with dog myths, specifically, myths about how to mess with a dog’s sense of smell.

We can train dogs to recognize the scent of cancer in people’s urine, to smell strokes and seizures before they happen. Why would we think coffee and citronella could trick them? Trying to trick the handler might work better (as in the bloodhound line-up, for which the handler wasn’t trained), but rarely.

The Colony Season 2 (Final)

29 Sep

The producers of the second season of the Colony are just mean. There’s no other way to say it. On an emotional level, the final episode felt very real. Jim has gone bug nuts crazy; Sian leaves the group without a second thought, and the rest start arguing about who asked who if they wanted to leave most.

The fire bombing of their old house was a little over the top. Where did the other group get explosives? Then, the final frame, showing a large group of people walking out of the house the group thought they would take over.

I appreciate that they wanted to have at least one person exposed to the virus and be removed, after all, what kind of apocalypse is this if there’s no actual danger. I wish it hadn’t been Michael and Amber (late arrival, early departure) but I understand why it happened.

What I don’t understand is why everyone else is still all gung ho to go to the fishing shack. They’ve been attacked, and kidnapped, but no deadly virus. Now they’re all eager to leave the attacks to go somewhere where half of the scouting party “died”. Does that really make sense?

TV

22 Sep

I like to think that I don’t watch that much television. Then the new fall season starts and suddenly I’m looking at the schedule trying to figure out what I’m watching, what I’m recording, and when will I watch what I’ve recorded… And I’m forced to be honest with myself. I watch television. Maybe not as much as some, but certainly more than others- more than my husband would watch if he weren’t married to me.

Still, no new shows have grabbed my attention so far this season, so mostly I’m figuring out where my favorites have been moved to.

Currently Watching: Bleach

19 Sep

I enjoy watching anime. Currently, we’re watching Bleach. It is over all a pretty good show, but its very hard to see how one season relates to the others, or even if we should call them seasons.

Watching episode 171, it seems far removed from the last episode we saw (over a month ago, granted). Only the two main characters remain. Of course, I was reminded that when we first started watching this show, there were sentient stuffed animals (not quite, but it is how I think of them) but they have not been seen in quite some time, either.

Watching: Haven

17 Sep

I’m not a Stephen King fan, but we decided to start watching the new SyFy show Haven when it started this summer. So far I am really enjoying it. More than anything it reminds me of early X-Files- there’s a new monster every week and good, though not really romantic, chemistry between the two leads. There is also, I think, a little bit of poking fun at Murder She Wrote- every week in this little town in Maine, there’s a new murder. But in this case, everyone knows that something is wrong. It makes for an enjoyable bit of camp.

The Colony (7)

15 Sep

It’s called a moment of recognition, and it is an essential component to a good novel. I realize The Colony is unscripted, but a moment of recognition is what I need to continue caring about these people. Just a moment to realize they aren’t the only ones struggling to survive, that the way to rebuild society is not to attack everyone you see.

But the producers have taken away that possibility. By refusing to give the colonists any positive interactions with strangers, they have taken away the one thing that makes these people human beings, not animals struggling to survive.

The Colony (6)

08 Sep

I really want to like this season of the Colony more. I remember last season being so much better. Once again we had two contrived encounters. The first one negative; the second positive. Once again, the only positive encounter centers around adding a new person to the group. There are no positive encounters when we don’t need to integrate new people. Why were there raiders when the pregnant woman came and they were all around the house, but not when they all left the house to have dinner with Tick?

There’s enough inherent drama in the situation. Let it be.

The Colony (5)

01 Sep

One of the things that made the first season of The Colony so watchable was the combination of colonists. There was a combination of practical and theoretical knowledge. This season seems very short on theory.

This episode there was a security breakdown because the guy on watch- the only person on watch all night, fell asleep. Do these people not understand the concept of watches? If you had 2 watches, each person would be able to get a little sleep, and at 4am, the second person would still be awake and aware. Where are the gamers when you need them?
