The Voice (2)

15 May

I know you’re expecting a roller derby post. I’m sorry. I missed the bout. I was in a plane flying across the country.

Watching the first of the battle rounds on The Voice, we had to wonder, shouldn’t they have built a save in there? What happens if you accidentally put up two amazing singers the first night? Possibly your strongest two singers, and you have to get rid of one of them? We wondered this especially about Adam Levine’s two. Is that part of the gamesmanship, of having the coaches compete against each other? That sucks for the singers.

American Idol: Calling out the judges

09 May

Its not that I miss Simon, per se; he was often needlessly mean in the hopes of getting a good quip in, but this year’s Idol judges are failing. They’re failing the audience, and more importantly, they are failing the contestants. Without honest criticism to know what they’re doing wrong, the performers aren’t improving, at least not along the lines of how they have in the past. Hearing how fabulous they are every week does not tell them they need to put their energy to improve.

Thank goodness for Jimmy, but that’s not his job. Get with the program judges.

American Idol: James Durbin needs to go

07 May

I’m okay with when Casey Abrams went home. Jacob Lusk, whatever, don’t care. But now, James Durbin needs to go. This week’s performance was AWFUL. And I may be the only person on the planet who likes metal and watches American Idol, so trust me when I say he doesn’t have the vocal chops to sing that kind of music, and I really wish Steven Tyler would say so. He doesn’t have the range or the gravel.

I would have thought he could have pulled off something 30 Seconds to Mars like, but, well, see my comments about this week’s performance.

The Voice

04 May

Apparently, after reaching my 1 year anniversary here, I decided I could start falling down on the job.

I am watching The Voice (is anyone surprised) and after two episodes, with the blind auditions done, I’m left mostly with the thought that Christina is turning in to Dolly Parton. I blame the dress.

I found in interesting that in the auditions they showed, only 2 people got all of the judges to turn around. I’m not actually certain they were the best 2 people. I think the judges just got a little tired of having to campaign against each other.

Think of the Children (and I don’t even have kids)

23 Apr

I try not to hold celebrities up to a higher standard than I do other people. Still, I think there should be some awareness of how their product affects their audience.

The chorus of Katy Perry’s latest hit includes the lines “wanna be a victim/ ready for abduction”. How is this a good message for kids? Who wants their preteen (girl or boy) singing along to this as they walk down the street?

Not every song can be “Firework”; I get that, but when your audience is mostly kids, would it hurt much to think about the message you’re sending?

American Idol (3)

02 Apr

Too much going on in the real world to write about anything important. So we are back to American Idol. Koala boy Casey chose the best Elton John song, “Your Song” and was wonderful. So glad he’s still around.

I was not surprised by Naima going. I was more surprised by how long it took, considering she did not make the original top 10.

As for Thia, I thought the judges did her a disservice by putting her through after Hollywood. Nothing to do with talent- just imagine what a force she could have been in a couple more years.

American Idol (2)

26 Mar

A few notes about this week’s American Idol.

-Jennifer’s eye shadow on Wednesday night scared me. It was like she was a blue raccoon.

-No one was spectacular on Wednesday night, but no one was awful, either. And that leads to bad results for the performers at the beginning of the show, because the audience doesn’t remember them.

-Which means it wasn’t too surprising that Casey was at the bottom. However, as soon as Ryan said that, I knew the judges would use their save. I don’t think they would have for Stefano, but for Casey, it was a no-brainer.

American Idol

08 Mar

I am watching American Idol this year, from Hollywood week on. I never watch the auditions because I hate seeing them make fun of the bad singers. Overall, I am pretty happy with the top 13. None of it was a huge surprise. I’m cheering for Casey Abrams to take 2nd because he plays upright bass and reminds me of my husband.

I cheer for 2nd because we determined long ago that the most talented person always ends up in 2nd, because they will still sell albums months after the show ends, and they are forced into a worse contract.

My Favorite Soundtracks: Once More with Feeling (Buffy TV Show)

06 Feb

Recently I threw my Once More With Feeling CD in while I was out and about. This is not “great” music, and certainly the lyrics sometimes leave a bit to be desired. (My husband claims someone should have given Whedon a rhyming dictionary.) But it does what a musical soundtrack is supposed to do. It tells the story.

The Giles and Tara duet is probably my favorite piece (not just because they are the two best singers) because of the emotion involved and the traditional (as in musicals) way the audience is given to understand a difficult, character defining, decision.

Casting Blame

12 Jan

I don’t like the phrase “Don’t retreat, reload.” I don’t think our political leaders, or wanna be political leaders, should encourage violence. Yes, there was violence in out country’s founding, but we have moved away from that. But sadly, this is not uncommon, on either side of the aisle.

However, I should know better than to blame violent acts on rhetoric. As a gamer, as someone who has read the Chick tracts, I know better. D&D, heavy metal music and GTA do not make people commit violent crimes. Neither did Sarah Palin’s words. That responsibility lies solely with the shooter.
