Pandora <3

03 Jul

I know, I’m late to the party. I’m ALWAYS late to the party, at least when it comes to a lot of pop culture. Just this month, I started listening to Pandora. Pandora, which no one has heard of, which was why they just had their IPO…

Anyway, big surprise, I love it.

I’ve created a number of stations, but my two favorites are Flogging Molly station and my Rhianna/Justin Timberlake station. DH has created an Afghan Whigs station that he likes.

I’m happy to have musical variety that is almost all upbeat to get me through the work day.

The Voice – Final Results

Javier’s duet was most definitely my favorite, but that might have more to do with the fact that I like Stevie Nicks better than I like any of the others. He held his own next to her, not an easy task, given her distinctive voice.

With Nakia out, I did not care much who won. Javier is certainly radio ready, and I wish him the best of luck.

My favorite judge was Blake Shelton. Every time he performed with his team, it was about showcasing his team, not himself. That was not the case for any of the other judges.

There was a lot of music in the finale, which I liked. Still, I couldn’t help thinking what Nakia could have done with an original song.

If I heard any of the individual performances on the radio, I would not be bumped. Everyone seemed consumer ready. The one stand out was Dia. With all the others, I’d hear them on the radio and not know (or really care) who was singing. Dia’s voice is one that will always be recognized.

I think the producers are hoping for Vicci, though, as she once again got the final, and most memorable, performance.

Okay, I guess it made some sense. All the people America voted through to the semis were the people they voted through to the finals. Its reasonable. I am still annoyed. Nakia was the best performer, pretty much from the beginning. Funny thing is, I’m betting on Vicci to win.

I like the fast pace on The Voice. My only issue is this part of the format. Even at the semi-final level, singers are only competing against the other singer from their team, not all the singers. Nakia was certainly top 4 material.

ReallyAmerica? You left it to Cee Lo to save Nakia? I guess that made it an easy choice for him. I thought Vicki had a good performance last night (and the sweet spot), but since only one performer from each team makes the finals, it’s got to be Nakia for team Cee Lo.

For once, neither of Christina’s or Adam’s singers were really inspiring last night, so either option for each would be fine.

And as for team Blake, I think Dia needs to be the one in the finals.Xeniais adorable, but she’s just not ready yet.

I was very happy with who went through to the semis on Christina’s team. They were definitely her strongest singers. I was surprised by Blake’s choice as to who to keep, as now he has two young women with “unique” tones to their voices, tones that sound rather similar to me.

Nakia is by far the strongest contender. It doesn’t matter who else Ce Lo has; he has Nakia.

Adam has the most well rounded team. I expect Javier to go through, but otherwise it’s a toss up.

Team Blake’s group performance was still the best at highlighting the contestants.

I DVR and fast forward through a lot of the show that isn’t singing, but last night, I specifically tried to watch while Carson Daly was speaking (his teleprompter reading was awful) so I could learn about the format. I heard nothing.

Per the internet, voters will put through one person from each team as will the coach. Makes sense, but I do not see how the coaches are battling each other at this point. (Maybe it’s all for pride.)

If it were me, I would put through Christina’s bald women, Blake’s bald guy and the girl who sang “Heartless”.

Last of the battle rounds. Next week, the live shows begin. What that means, exactly, who knows. But I’ll tune in next week to find out.

For the first time, I disagreed with a coach’s decision. I thought Christina got it wrong. Her choice has great power in her voice and she can hit the high notes, plus she was definitely the “hotter” of the two.  But power and ability to hit notes doesn’t matter if you can’t sing the entire song. I thought the other girl had a better voice and more consistency.

Strongest teams: Cee Lo and Adam.

I think I’m understanding Christina’s strategy. The first battle round, when she put up two incredibly strong singers against each other, I was a little concerned that she may be hurting her chances. But now that we’re through three battle rounds, I’m getting it. She takes two similar singers each week and has them battle. That way, she’s left with the strongest person, in that style, on her team.

I didn’t like the arrangement used by Blake’s singers (and didn’t much like either of them). Also, “Creep” is not a good song for a singing competition, just for future reference.

Watching The Voice is very different from watching American Idol for us in one very important aspect- we appear to be hearing the same performance as the judges/coaches.

On Idol, there are performances we think are awful and that the judges love or vice versa. There are occasionally performances so far to one side of the spectrum or the other that we agree with the judges, but in general, if we enjoyed it, the judges will hate it.

On The Voice, even on the close calls, we are managing to pick the same person to go through as the coaches.
