GD vs SW (part 2)

06 Jun

The Wenches opened the night with twenty minutes of amazing defense. Without those first bouts, Danger wins, but the Wenches played great and then stayed good.

Nasty Trick and Juliet Bravo managed to shut down Danger’s biggest weapon, Reanimateher all night long. She had lead jammer position only once or twice. Carmen Getsome was the only Danger jammer who ever really got it going, while Juliet and Jalepeno Business poured on the heat for the Wenches and giving Anya Heels the jammer’s star whenever some energy was needed.

It was a closer match then the 20 point score differential indicated.

Grave Danger v Sockit Wenches

05 Jun

Derby is a lot like the NFL. Undefeated in the regular season means nothing in the playoffs and defense wins championships. Tonight, undefeated Grave Danger took on the Sockit Wenches in the Rat City Rollergirls’ championship bout. The teams had met twice before, in the preseason when the Wenches won the half length bout, and in the regular season when Danger won in the final seconds.

If bouts were judged like UFC fights, Danger might have won, but in derby, like football, the scoreboard rules. Early amazing defense by the Wenches earned them a lead Danger just could not overcome.

A Busy Day

05 Jun

I am an extrovert, but only barely. On the Meyers-Briggs test, my E score is under 10. While I love seeing friends and hanging out with them, I need down time. Last weekend, I took five days off and got in some down time because this weekend, especially today, is crazy.

Charles has a meeting with his new census team. I have a massage therapy appointment. Then we have a D&D game. We’ll leave there, come home, walk the dogs, and then head out to the roller derby championship match. It will be a good day, but a long day.

Financial Moral Support

04 Jun

Late last year, as part of our resolution to get our finances under control, I joined the Women in Red message boards over at msn.com. The (mostly) women on these boards provide moral support, good advice, and help hold me accountable to our financial goals.

I am an active member on two boards, the West Region Racers, which is all about paying down debt, and the Controlled/No Spend board, which is about sticking to your budget and finding those little leaks in your spending. Both are helping me to stay focused on long term goals and allow the occasional rant.

Lets Talk about Money

03 Jun

I like talking about money and finances. It’s an area that interests me greatly, and it bugs me that as families, that we don’t talk about money more. I get that parents don’t want kids to worry about where the next meal is coming from, but once they are older, how are they supposed to understand balancing a checkbook, budgeting, credit cards, if their parents never teach them?

I never want to seem like I am bragging or whining when talking about our financial situation. I just want to learn for other people, and maybe help them learn something, too.

Not writing every day

02 Jun

I must get better at writing daily. 100 words is not that many. And once you get used to the format and length, not that difficult to end up at exactly 100 words. I can now eyeball a piece and know if I’m going to be over or not and even have a good guess of how many words I’ll need to remove.

But I’m still not writing every day. I can kind of give myself a pass on the weekends when things get really busy, but weeknights, I’m already in front of the computer. I resolve to do better.

My Favorite Comics – Girl Genius by Phil & Kaja Foglio

27 May

If you are not reading Girl Genius by Phil & Kaja Foglio, you should be. In fact, go read it right now and come back once you’re done. It might take you a little while, but that’s okay. I’ll wait.

Girl Genius is steam punk done right. The story lines and the artwork are bright and vibrant. The characters are likable, lovable even, and the heroine is equal parts mad scientist (she will take over the world), daring adventurer (even if she has to do it country by country), and caring friend (she risks her life to save her friends).

Busy Weekends

23 May

We have standing plans every weekend. Right now, every other Saturday we have a 14th level D&D game run by a friend. On Sundays of the off weeks, my husband runs a 17th level D&D game. He’s currently considering starting a ShadowRun game to run on the Sundays he’s not running D&D. So that would be every other weekend with a game on both days.

On top of this, we have to take his mom shopping.

I love spending time with our friends and playing in the games, but I think I might start needing a weekend from my weekends.

Normally, I’m an optimist

21 May

I’ve always been just a little paranoid about my dogs. If I wake up in the middle of the night and they don’t react, I’ll put a hand on their side to make sure they’re breathing. Losing Moree (our Aussie) last November, 5-6 years earlier than we’d been expecting, just made me worse.

Right now, Smokey (our lab/pit mix) has hurt his leg. He can’t get up on the bed with us, and that makes me sad, and then I get even more paranoid. It’s a vicious cycle. How is it that I’ve become a pessimist about my pets’ health?

Finding time to read and think

19 May

It will come as no surprise to anyone here that I love to read. What may be less evident is that I enjoy reading non-fiction as well. The problem is, while I can get lost in a good fiction story, non-fiction is rarely all absorbing. That means I read those books more slowly and sporadically.

I need dedicated reading time. Now that my Monday night critique group is more of a try to get together and write group, maybe I’ll take the off Mondays and give myself over to non-fiction. After all, what else am I doing- playing bejeweled blitz?
