Citibank is screwing up my student loan payments, AGAIN

06 Jun

Citibank has once again screwed up payments on my federal student loans. This makes the third time this year. It’s getting beyond frustrating. For some reason, their online system and their auto-debit system do not communicate with each other. This bugs me because every other creditor I deal with is able to link the two.

Right now, if I check my payment history online, it doesn’t show any of my auto-payments. And last month, because I made an extra payment online (even though I made it following all their rules) it decided not to take my full auto-payment this month.

Just Watched: Assassination of a High School President

05 Jun

It’s not that I don’t “get” dark comedy. I just know where it came from. Shakespeare’s Dark Comedies were stories that ended in marriage, even if the idea of those marriages made you shudder. Modern dark comedies still end on an actual up note, with the hero doing the right thing, and the bad guys getting their comeuppance.

Still, Assassination of a High School President was an enjoyable bit of noir dark comedy. Not as good as Brick, which was pure noir, not quite the level of dysfunction as Heathers, for dark comedy, but enjoyable in its own sense.

Board Game: Puerto Rico

04 Jun

We recently bought the board gamePuerto Rico. We had played it before at a friend’s house and I really enjoyed it. So, we picked it up when a local game store was having a sale. Before I had always played it with 4-5 players. We have mostly played with 3 players since buying it.Puerto Ricois a very different game with 3 players. This was really brought home to me last night when we played 5 player again.

I don’t know that I would say the strategy is different, but that with three players the strategy is delayed.

Retirement Articles

03 Jun

There are a million retirement articles out there that tell you what milestones you should be hitting to retire a millionaire, or at least have a comfortable retirement. The thing is, a lot of us aren’t going to meet these milestones, though some people will.

Others, due to time spent in college, may not meet early milestones but will be able to have a comfortable retirement due to increased earnings later.

It can all be very confusing, and it’s nice to have people to talk to about whether or not by 35 you should have 1.4 times your salary saved.

Bonus Hockey Content: The Stanley Cup Finals

02 Jun

The Stanley Cup Finals have started. Go Canucks!

I missed the first two periods of the game last night, so I missed all of the penalties. Instead, I only saw the third period, which was 20 minutes of hard fought 5 on 5 play. It was amazing.

The Canucks were definitely on offense more, but Tim Thomas stood on his head in net for the Bruins. When Torres scored the game’s only goal with 19 seconds left, it was a thing of beauty. I can only imagine what it must have been like to be inVancouverat that moment.

MythBusters (ep 167)

02 Jun

About the myths: I’m not surprised you can’t dodge a bullet aimed at your chest, but what about one aimed at your head? That would require much less movement.

And while water may not be compressible, it is easily displaced.

One thing they did last night that bugged me- when the timing foil for the gun didn’t work at first, they did not show us how they fixed it, or tell us why it didn’t work in the beginning. I learn as much from their experiment set up as I do the experiments, and I really wanted to know more.

The Voice (5)

01 Jun

Last of the battle rounds. Next week, the live shows begin. What that means, exactly, who knows. But I’ll tune in next week to find out.

For the first time, I disagreed with a coach’s decision. I thought Christina got it wrong. Her choice has great power in her voice and she can hit the high notes, plus she was definitely the “hotter” of the two.  But power and ability to hit notes doesn’t matter if you can’t sing the entire song. I thought the other girl had a better voice and more consistency.

Strongest teams: Cee Lo and Adam.

Just Watched: LadyHawke

31 May

I first saw LadyHawke when I was 11 or 12. It was the most romantic movie ever; Matthew Broderick was beyond cute; I fell in love with Rutger Hauer, and I wanted to be Michelle Pfeiffer. It has remained one of my favorite movies over the years, and it holds up fairly well, with a couple notable exceptions.

The soundtrack is awful. There needs to be a director’s cut with a different soundtrack.

Apparently it hasn’t been digitally remastered, or at least the Netflix version available for download hasn’t. It did not translate well on to our big screen HDTV.

Remembering

30 May

Today is Memorial Day, a day for remembering our fallen soldiers, police officers, and firefighters- really anyone who has died in the line of service. I honor the memories of every one of those men and women.

Given the recent death of my grandmother, though, today I also want to remember those who served in a different way- the wives and husbands of those who go off to fight, protect our cities, and put out the flames. Thank you for taking care of those who take care of us. Your sacrifices make their possible, and I, for one, am grateful.

Roller Derby: Rat City All Stars vs Oly Rollers Costra Nosa Donnas

29 May

If you read my recaps of Western Regionals you know that Oly (and RockyMountain) is a tier above all the other teams. Oly is ranked number 2 nationally, and Seattleis 6th in the West. The bout went about as well asRatCity could have expected it to (losing by a little over 100 points).

I am unhappy withRatCity’s strategy and jammer rotation. Why aren’t Juliet Bravo and Re-AnimateHer jamming? But I’m not the coach. And at Western Regionals this year, I will cheer forRatCity, but I’ll also be rooting for the Oly Rollers.
