The Voice (s2 ep6)

06 Mar

Battlerounds! I like that we did six in our two hours- lots of singing and not too much time spent on people we’ll never see again.

I was really impressed with the battles. There were some amazing performances. In a couple cases, I would have chosen differently than the coaches, but I could also understand why they chose the way they did. The only choice I really disagreed with was Blake’s first- Raelynn.

I know she reminds him of his wife, but the girl can’t sing anything outside country. I don’t think she makes his team stronger at all.

It was the last night of the blind auditions. I feel a little bad for the people who audition later on, as the judges have only one or two spots left. They are pickier. There were people last night, who I am certain, if they had auditioned earlier, would have been chosen.

I was amused (though not surprised) to see that Kelly Clarkson will be one of the guest mentors on the show. I’ve heard rumors that she had a break with the American Idol folks, and I think this probably really confirms it.

Looking forward to the battle rounds.

I came in half an hour late, but last night I was more impressed by the talent than I’d been previously. But that might have something to do with the fact that we ended up on American Idol for half an hour last Thursday. It was awful- even though the judges seemed to like some of what we saw. C commented that he wasn’t certain how they could air that at the same time the Voice was on the air.

I was surprised Cee Lo was the only one to turn his chair around for We Are the Champions guy.

Admitting that I miss the first half hour of the Voice to watch How I Met Your Mother, but so far, no one in the blind auditions has blown me away the way Nikita did last year. (And yes, I think he should have won, or at least made the finals, so I’m going to harp on it.)

I found it interesting that they promo-ed three albums from last year’s winner and two other finalists, but not an album from Cee Lo’s finalist. Maybe her’s just isn’t done yet, but I do think that’s something contestants should pay attention to.

They started hyping the Alicia Keys backup singer Sunday night, so we knew he had to be good. I wasn’t surprised that Cee Lo turned around for the soldier. She sang Pat Benetar, and we know from last season that he’s a Benetar fan.

I was annoyed by the comments of “oh you’re good looking, I wish I would have pressed my button”. That’s the whole point of the blind auditions. Looks aren’t supposed to sway the judges. And truth is, I wasn’t surprised at any of their non-decisions. Pitch problems or something else, those folks weren’t cutting it vocally.

The Voice is back! I think my two favorite singers were the classically trained guy and the former Musketeer. I don’t know names yet. I’ll learn them as we go. Overall, I was on board with the decisions about who got to continue on and who did not. No one blew me away like Nikita last year, but that’s okay. They’ve got time to get better.

This season, the judges get teams of 12 instead of 8. That should add at least 4 weeks to the show. That will give us all more time to get to know the contestants.

What I’m Watching: The Sing-Off

07 Oct

We miss the first half hour of The Sing-Off because we’re watching How I Met Your Mother, but after that, it’s the definitive choice for filling the time until Castle comes on.

I appreciate the skill it takes to be an a cappella group. There were times last season when it sounded like some of the groups had bands backing them up.

I like the judges on this show more than any judges other than those at The Voice. Ben Folds is terrific. Their critique is constructive and overall positive. How’s that for a concept? Help your singers get better.

TV without the DVR

27 Sep

When we dumped cable, we got rid of the DVR. Now, I am faced with a new season of television without the ability to watch two shows that are on at the same time. So far, that doesn’t seem like it will be a big deal. What does seem like a big deal- probably no American Idol for me this year and likely little X Factor, as I always preferred to DVR the shows and just watch the performances, skipping the filler and the judges. I think I’ll manage The Voice and The Sing Off , but not the others.

The Voice – Final Results

Javier’s duet was most definitely my favorite, but that might have more to do with the fact that I like Stevie Nicks better than I like any of the others. He held his own next to her, not an easy task, given her distinctive voice.

With Nakia out, I did not care much who won. Javier is certainly radio ready, and I wish him the best of luck.

My favorite judge was Blake Shelton. Every time he performed with his team, it was about showcasing his team, not himself. That was not the case for any of the other judges.

The Voice (10)

There was a lot of music in the finale, which I liked. Still, I couldn’t help thinking what Nakia could have done with an original song.

If I heard any of the individual performances on the radio, I would not be bumped. Everyone seemed consumer ready. The one stand out was Dia. With all the others, I’d hear them on the radio and not know (or really care) who was singing. Dia’s voice is one that will always be recognized.

I think the producers are hoping for Vicci, though, as she once again got the final, and most memorable, performance.
