The Voice (s2 ep2)

07 Feb

They started hyping the Alicia Keys backup singer Sunday night, so we knew he had to be good. I wasn’t surprised that Cee Lo turned around for the soldier. She sang Pat Benetar, and we know from last season that he’s a Benetar fan.

I was annoyed by the comments of “oh you’re good looking, I wish I would have pressed my button”. That’s the whole point of the blind auditions. Looks aren’t supposed to sway the judges. And truth is, I wasn’t surprised at any of their non-decisions. Pitch problems or something else, those folks weren’t cutting it vocally.

The Voice is back! I think my two favorite singers were the classically trained guy and the former Musketeer. I don’t know names yet. I’ll learn them as we go. Overall, I was on board with the decisions about who got to continue on and who did not. No one blew me away like Nikita last year, but that’s okay. They’ve got time to get better.

This season, the judges get teams of 12 instead of 8. That should add at least 4 weeks to the show. That will give us all more time to get to know the contestants.

ReallyAmerica? You left it to Cee Lo to save Nakia? I guess that made it an easy choice for him. I thought Vicki had a good performance last night (and the sweet spot), but since only one performer from each team makes the finals, it’s got to be Nakia for team Cee Lo.

For once, neither of Christina’s or Adam’s singers were really inspiring last night, so either option for each would be fine.

And as for team Blake, I think Dia needs to be the one in the finals.Xeniais adorable, but she’s just not ready yet.

I was very happy with who went through to the semis on Christina’s team. They were definitely her strongest singers. I was surprised by Blake’s choice as to who to keep, as now he has two young women with “unique” tones to their voices, tones that sound rather similar to me.

Nakia is by far the strongest contender. It doesn’t matter who else Ce Lo has; he has Nakia.

Adam has the most well rounded team. I expect Javier to go through, but otherwise it’s a toss up.

Team Blake’s group performance was still the best at highlighting the contestants.

Last of the battle rounds. Next week, the live shows begin. What that means, exactly, who knows. But I’ll tune in next week to find out.

For the first time, I disagreed with a coach’s decision. I thought Christina got it wrong. Her choice has great power in her voice and she can hit the high notes, plus she was definitely the “hotter” of the two.  But power and ability to hit notes doesn’t matter if you can’t sing the entire song. I thought the other girl had a better voice and more consistency.

Strongest teams: Cee Lo and Adam.

I think I’m understanding Christina’s strategy. The first battle round, when she put up two incredibly strong singers against each other, I was a little concerned that she may be hurting her chances. But now that we’re through three battle rounds, I’m getting it. She takes two similar singers each week and has them battle. That way, she’s left with the strongest person, in that style, on her team.

I didn’t like the arrangement used by Blake’s singers (and didn’t much like either of them). Also, “Creep” is not a good song for a singing competition, just for future reference.

I know you’re expecting a roller derby post. I’m sorry. I missed the bout. I was in a plane flying across the country.

Watching the first of the battle rounds on The Voice, we had to wonder, shouldn’t they have built a save in there? What happens if you accidentally put up two amazing singers the first night? Possibly your strongest two singers, and you have to get rid of one of them? We wondered this especially about Adam Levine’s two. Is that part of the gamesmanship, of having the coaches compete against each other? That sucks for the singers.

Apparently, after reaching my 1 year anniversary here, I decided I could start falling down on the job.

I am watching The Voice (is anyone surprised) and after two episodes, with the blind auditions done, I’m left mostly with the thought that Christina is turning in to Dolly Parton. I blame the dress.

I found in interesting that in the auditions they showed, only 2 people got all of the judges to turn around. I’m not actually certain they were the best 2 people. I think the judges just got a little tired of having to campaign against each other.
