The Voice- s3 Battle Rounds 4

17 Oct

Christina used her first steal last night. That was the biggest news from The Voice. There were some difficult decisions for the judges, at least one time when I would have chosen differently than the coach (but I understand the decision), etc. It was a pretty typical night for the battle rounds. There were no standout performances. There might have been a bad performance, but they chose not to show us two battles, so we don’t know for certain. What we do know is that the teams are almost full, and soon it will be time for the knockout rounds.

The Voice- s3 Battle Rounds 3

Last night there were a lot of decent, evenly matched battle rounds. In a couple of cases I had a clear favorite, but a lot of that has to do with my personal preferences, which I know the judges don’t always share. But for the most part, there wasn’t really a “wrong” choice to be had. I think my favorite performance by the contestants was You Give Love a Bad Name (everyone should have to sing Bon Jovi). However, if Cee Lo and Rob Thomas wanted to do an album of Hall & Oates covers, we would so buy it.

Not quite certain what I think about The Voice not showing all the battle rounds. I know that there’s the knock out round this year, which means we have one more round in the same number of shows, but I have to wonder why the extra time wasn’t taken from the Blind Auditions.

I was okay with it when I thought I could log into the website to see the full battles. But no, it was just the same short clip from the show last night. Do we expect the winners of those battles to fall in the knockout round?

We missed the first half of The Voice last night, but I watched the performances we missed online this morning. C was especially disappointed that we missed Santeria last night as that’s one of his favorite songs.

What I like most about the battle rounds this year is the steal. I’ve commented in past years on the fact that sometimes, a coach manages to put two of their best people up against each other and a really good singer gets knocked out of the competition too early. The steal allows for that person to have the chance to stick around.

For those wondering, yes I am watching The Voice again this season. I am not blogging the blind audition rounds because I don’t find them terribly interesting, and so far, no one has chosen a contestant that really annoys me (unlike last season).

I know the producers want us to wonder whether or not people are getting chosen, but I do get annoyed by watching people for whom no chairs turn around when they are skipping half of the people who are chosen.

My other annoyance is that women who are iffy are getting chosen over men who are good.

Congratulations to Jermaine Paul, winner of season two of The Voice.

Since I have no beef with how the voting turned out, I want to talk about the show and differences from last year.

Both seasons have featured duets with the contestants and coaches. What I missed this year was the meaningful duets of contestants and other singers. Last year, Javier sang with Stevie Nicks, and it was amazing.

I also missed each of the contestants getting their own original song. It is nice to make a song your own, but it’s better when the song actually is your own.

I have to say, I think it’s anybody’s game except Chris Mann’s. I feel bad, because he has an amazing voice, but he honestly doesn’t have much range. He talked in the beginning on how he didn’t want to have to change himself, but he wanted to sing pop- well, he can’t sing pop without toning himself down or at least learning to loosen up.

Tony Lucca’s arrangement for 99 Problems was absolutely perfect. If they hadn’t told me it was a Jay-Z song, I would have thought it was the blues.

Jermaine and Juliet also had really great nights.

I went 50/50. I love Juliet Simms, so I was happy to see her go through. I was surprised by the Chris Mann vote. He definitely has a voice, no one can argue that, but his stated intention (back during the blind auditions) was to sing pop. He has been unable to let go enough to do that well. But maybe the experience will teach him that it’s okay to be an opera singer.

It was nice to see Adam and Cee Lo learn from the Nakia experience and assign their points in a way that was meaningful to them.

It was a great show last night. I thought everyone sang really well. No matter who makes the finals, it will be a good show. And I want to remind people that just being in the semi-finals can get contestants an album. It did for Blake’s semi-finalist last year.

Chris Mann has a voice. He still can’t sing pop, as the group performance showed. Erin Willett also got lost on the group performance.

My guesses for finals: Tony Lucca, Jermaine Paul, Lindsay Pavao, and Jamar Rodgers. The last really uncertain, but I think Jamar appeals to more people than Juliet.

For once, all of my predictions came true. I think that is because last night, we had the most clear cut choices of the season. I could see Cee Lo wavering, with the comment about Cheesa having a voice- she does. But I do not believe that diva voices are necessarily better voices than rocker voices. Juliet will never sing Whitney Houston, but Cheesa couldn’t pull off Stevie Nicks- who sang with last year’s winner of The Voice during the finale.

For Team Adam and Team Cee Lo, the best singers and performers are definitely made it to the semi-finals.
