The Voice (s2 ep4)

21 Feb

I came in half an hour late, but last night I was more impressed by the talent than I’d been previously. But that might have something to do with the fact that we ended up on American Idol for half an hour last Thursday. It was awful- even though the judges seemed to like some of what we saw. C commented that he wasn’t certain how they could air that at the same time the Voice was on the air.

I was surprised Cee Lo was the only one to turn his chair around for We Are the Champions guy.

Archaeological Botany

19 Feb

Imagine this- you’re a botanist working at a major research university when one day you get a call from the archeology department. “Hi, we’ve found what we’re pretty certain was a garden over 2,500 years ago. Do you think you could tell us what kind of plants lived her?”

I think that call has to come first, because how are archeologists going to recognize that there’s pollen captured in plaster? As a pollen expert, how often do you get a chance to work on a project like this?

Do we need a new field of study for botany- archeological botany?

Blog Feature: So Over Debt

18 Feb

Recently, Andrea at So Over Debt became a full time blogger. She was absolutely miserable at her job, and it wasn’t paying what it was supposed to be, so she finally decided it wasn’t worth it, and now she spends her time finding ways to entertain us. Well, maybe that’s not exactly what she spends all of her time on.

She is a fantastic writer though, and one of her posts even got picked up by Reader’s Digest.

This week, she’s been telling it like it is- to her son, and to us. My advice? Don’t stand in her way.

Religion vs Women

17 Feb

Since when is religious freedom the trump card of all the rights granted us in the Constitution? Since when does your religious freedom mean more than my religious freedom? Since when does your religious freedom outweigh my sovereignty over my own body?

Since when, in the name of information, do you get to rape me? (Vaginally probing women without regard for whether or not they consent is rape.) Since when am I too stupid to understand what I’m doing?

Oh, wait, in your mind, I’m female. I have always been too stupid. Why do you even allow us to vote?

Why I’m not Watching American Idol This Season

16 Feb

When we got rid of cable (except for the limited basic package that keeps our internet cheap) we lost the DVR. I cannot, can NOT watch American Idol without a DVR. Back when Simon and Paula were still there, it was occasionally worth it to listen to the banter between the judges, but not anymore. Even during Hollywood week, I have no real desire to hear what the judges say.

So, I am not watching Idol this year. If I can’t fast forward to the performances and skip Ryan and the judges, I spend more time being annoyed than entertained.

No More Braces

15 Feb

My post is late today because I wanted to announce- the braces are off! That’s right after 14 months, they have come off. And while 14 months seemed like a very long time to me, it was, in fact, 10 months less than was originally predicted.

My guess is that orthodontists are used to teenagers who do not always follow directions very well. Adults, however, have chosen to have the braces and are even paying for them. We are much more motivated and actually follow instructions, meaning it takes less time.

Anyway, braces are off and I can chew gum.

The Voice (s2 ep3)

14 Feb

Admitting that I miss the first half hour of the Voice to watch How I Met Your Mother, but so far, no one in the blind auditions has blown me away the way Nikita did last year. (And yes, I think he should have won, or at least made the finals, so I’m going to harp on it.)

I found it interesting that they promo-ed three albums from last year’s winner and two other finalists, but not an album from Cee Lo’s finalist. Maybe her’s just isn’t done yet, but I do think that’s something contestants should pay attention to.

The Grammy Awards Show

13 Feb

I watched the Grammys last night, but only up through Best New Artist. I did find it interesting that the Grammys have become more about performances than giving awards. I swear that in the two and a half hours I had it on, I saw maybe one award per half hour (if that). I like that better. I love music, do not like talking heads.

I am not a Foo Fighters fan (nor was I a Nirvana fan), so I could have done with a little less of them. I loved Adele’s performance though, and always enjoy watching Blake Shelton.

Movie Review: Killer Elites

12 Feb

I love Jason Statham and Clive Owen- love them. So, forever ago when I saw previews for a movie that included them both, I knew I would see it eventually. Of course, we don’t see anything in the theater, so I didn’t see Killer Elites until last night.

It was a slightly more serious movie than I would have hoped. Both men have a history of doing tongue in cheek action movies, but considering this was supposedly based on a true story, I guess they couldn’t get away with the ridiculous.

Now if only there had been some shirtless scenes.

Blog Feature: The Chronicles of Cardigan

11 Feb

I love Corgis. We often think “Our next dog should be a Corgi”. Mind you, we’ve been thinking this since before we got Junebug (though before we got Smokey we thought we should get a Beagle, so maybe down the road there will be a Corgi.) While I think all Corgis are cute, I am partial to the Cardigans- the ones with tails.

Currently, I get my Corgi fix via The Chronicles of Cardigan. It’s a mostly lighthearted blog that focuses on the joy dogs bring us. How can you not smile seeing these great pictures of a happy dog?
