The Voice – Final Results

30 Jun

Javier’s duet was most definitely my favorite, but that might have more to do with the fact that I like Stevie Nicks better than I like any of the others. He held his own next to her, not an easy task, given her distinctive voice.

With Nakia out, I did not care much who won. Javier is certainly radio ready, and I wish him the best of luck.

My favorite judge was Blake Shelton. Every time he performed with his team, it was about showcasing his team, not himself. That was not the case for any of the other judges.

I was not surprised by the result Adam and Jamie got regarding floating on your back instead of treading water to survive an underwater blast. The military generally knows what they are talking about when it comes to keeping soldiers alive.

We also watch Deadliest Warrior, so we already knew that paper armor worked, but it was fun to see the ways in which the Build Team chose to test it. However, when it came to crawling along a rope over water wearing armor (paper or steel)- who thought that would be a good idea? Shouldn’t someone have common sense?

I enjoyed the lighting a tomb with mirrors myth. It was simple and straightforward. I was not surprised by the result (plausible but not practical), due to the sun moving.

As for the Build Team, we have decided they do not even field calls from the insurance company anymore. Torrie’s harpoon, while it worked, was scary. On this one, I really think they should have pressed the “do not try this at home” bit harder. Maybe they should have had the “professional drivers on a closed course, do not attempt” standard white text scrolling across the bottom of the screen.

MythBusters: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

I think what I like best about the retrospective shows is when they highlight myths I only barely remember- the ones that aren’t on every other retrospective show they do. Last night, it was the first myth to make their countdown that made us smile. We barely remembered the landing a plane with just an air traffic controller to talk you down. Not only is it an impressive result, it reminds you how skilled air traffic controllers have to be. This guy not only knows his own maximum stress job, he apparently has the control panel of a plane memorized.

I was very happy with who went through to the semis on Christina’s team. They were definitely her strongest singers. I was surprised by Blake’s choice as to who to keep, as now he has two young women with “unique” tones to their voices, tones that sound rather similar to me.

Nakia is by far the strongest contender. It doesn’t matter who else Ce Lo has; he has Nakia.

Adam has the most well rounded team. I expect Javier to go through, but otherwise it’s a toss up.

Team Blake’s group performance was still the best at highlighting the contestants.

Of all the flat fixes, only two actually seemed viable to me, not because of how well they worked, but more due to the likelihood of me being able to pull them off.

Those two were the stick to make a sled and driving on the rims. But where do you go hiking or camping that there’s straw lying around, or even enough tall grasses? And unless you were cutting down a Christmas tree, whose going to have a chainsaw to make the wooden wheel? Same type of question for the manhole cover. Welding materials but no spare? Spare me.

I DVR and fast forward through a lot of the show that isn’t singing, but last night, I specifically tried to watch while Carson Daly was speaking (his teleprompter reading was awful) so I could learn about the format. I heard nothing.

Per the internet, voters will put through one person from each team as will the coach. Makes sense, but I do not see how the coaches are battling each other at this point. (Maybe it’s all for pride.)

If it were me, I would put through Christina’s bald women, Blake’s bald guy and the girl who sang “Heartless”.

Catching up on Entourage

07 Jun

We’ve been catching up on Entourage. I love this show, but I’m feeling a little nit picky about Vince’s current adrenaline junky phase. The thing is, I know movie stars are treated differently (which is a big part of what the show is about), but there are some things that still stretch it for me.

No one jumps solo out of an airplane the day they decide they want to. It just doesn’t happen. And while a celeb may not need a motorcycle endorsement to drive off the lot, they won’t ride it well, if they’ve never driven one before.

About the myths: I’m not surprised you can’t dodge a bullet aimed at your chest, but what about one aimed at your head? That would require much less movement.

And while water may not be compressible, it is easily displaced.

One thing they did last night that bugged me- when the timing foil for the gun didn’t work at first, they did not show us how they fixed it, or tell us why it didn’t work in the beginning. I learn as much from their experiment set up as I do the experiments, and I really wanted to know more.

I Slept, Sue Me

26 May

MythBusters was a re-run last night, which is a good thing, considering I fell asleep at 8:30pm. Next week will be a new episode, though.

My habit of recording American Idol and only watching the performances meant that I had no idea the final performance night would be Tuesday (it has been on a Wednesday Thursday schedule all season) so we missed that, and then chose not to watch the results show. After all, simply having msn.com open means I see who won every couple minutes.

Things are crazy at our house, but hopefully we’ll find a new normal soon.
