MythBusters (s9 ep7) Thanksgiving Special

19 Nov

I was so looking forward to this episode. Alton Brown on MythBusters- talk about a geeky food lovers dream. I hope they do more of these. And, oh yeah, it is pretty cool that if you know what you are doing, you could cook an entire Thanksgiving meal on your car engine.

As for the build team, like Tory, I am a texture eater, so very few things “taste like chicken” to me. And while it was obviously easier with when the meat was not spiced and breaded, I still think texture could play a part in the ground meats.

Your Money Friday: Career Enders

16 Nov

Have you ever been fired for cause? Put on an improvement plan? How did it affect you? Would you react differently if it happened today, in your current career? Are you at a point where it would be a career ender? And what impact would all of this have on your personal life? Could you move upwards and onwards?

Given the current news cycle about top government officials having to step down for mistakes that really shouldn’t have been career enders, the questions of the day over at Your Money are about how you would handle that kind of situation.

Secession

15 Nov

After every election, one side or the other is unhappy. As a general rule, Democrats threaten to move toCanada, and Republicans ask to secede from the union. For Republicans secession is the only option because there’s no country with all the amenities of theUSand freedom from taxes and social programs.

I am, in this current round of posturing, amused by the fact that while over 100,000 residents ofTexashave signed the petition to letTexassecede from the union,Austinresidents have started their own petition to secede fromTexasand remain part of theUS.

The Voice: s3 Top 12 Eliminations

14 Nov

Because the producers could, the last 4 contestant left standing on the stage last night were the 4 judges’ saves. I was not surprised to see Michaela go home. She’s amazingly talented, but last week, Blake had to save her, and her Monday performance was just not very good.

I was surprised to see Adriana go home. She’s young, pretty, and got in Adam’s face on Monday while singing very well. At the same time, she’s the exact same kind of singer as Sylvia and not quite as good.

I enjoyed both the team performances from both CeeLo and Blake.

The Voice: s3 Top 12

13 Nov

In a change in format, the top 12 singers are not just competing against their teammates. I prefer this as it lets the best singers stick around, even if a couple of them happen to be on the same team. And since only two people will go home tonight, that means that even if the same 4 people are the lowest vote getters, two of them will have one more week to impressAmerica.

My guess for who’s going home- Cody and Michaela or Melanie. Melanie performed better last night, but might be too odd for a lot of people.

MythBusters (s9 ep6)

12 Nov

Last night’s episode was the one in which the crew accidentally sent a cannonball into someone’s house. I appreciated the way the show handled the experience.

I was bothered that they kept saying this was the first time someone had fired a stone cannonball in a few hundred years. WRONG! Jaime hand carved a granite cannonball for the tree cannon. They may have finally solved the mystery of what happened to it, though. Apparently, granite cannonballs break on impact.

I was thrilled to see them do a Burn Notice myth- even if it was busted. Hopefully there will be more.

Blog Feature: Broke Ass Mommy

10 Nov

There are many things I love about Broke Ass Mommy, but I think my favorite thing is her ingenuity. She is a stay at home mom, but she determined this summer that she would earn $1,000  through side projects. And she is almost there. She has done it via writing projects, sponsors on her website, and now, participation in her first focus group.  But no matter how much she talks about money, the one thing you will take away from this blog is how much being able to stay at home with her daughter makes being broke ass worth it.

Your Money Friday: Professional Dress for Women

09 Nov

This thread kind of veers off topic early on, but there is an important message here, anyway. This message goes out to all women, but young women especially- showing cleavage is never professional. It doesn’t matter if you are young and hot (you will still be hot, even without showing cleavage) or old and past your prime, cleavage isn’t professional.

I know that some women are larger or higher busted and that sometimes clothes that fit other women with no issues will still show cleavage. That doesn’t matter. You must dress for your body. Camisoles and layers are your friends.

The Voice: s3 Live Playoffs

08 Nov

During the first of the live rounds, a couple people (Amanda, Trevyn) really shined, others not so much. In preparation for the results show tonight, here are my predictions for who makes it through from each team.

Team Adam: Bryan Keith and Amanda Brown, with a coach’s save for Melanie Martinez

Team Blake: Terry McDermott and Michaela Paige, with a coach’s save for Liz Davis. (Julio Cesar Castillo could sneak in here, too.)

Team Christina: Dez Duron and Sylvia Yacoub, with a coach’s save for De’borah

Team CeeLo: Trevyn Hunte and MacKenzie Bourg, with a coach’s save for Nicholas David.

Winds of Change

07 Nov

Before this year, every time same sex marriage has come up for a vote of the people, it has failed. Thirty-two times, voters have voted for inequality. Yesterday, that changed.

In Maine, Maryland, and Washington, voters voiced their support for equality. Minnesota voters said no to a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage.

Those who argue against equality still have 32 wins, but they are all in the past. Yesterday, the issue came up for votes in four states and voters in all four states voted for acceptance and equality. Hope and change- brought to you by the American people.
