Your Money Friday: Retirement Lies

19 Oct

Are you planning for retirement or do you have your head buried in the sand? Do you think you are too young to have to think about this sort of thing, or are you older but certain it is not going to be an issue for you? Is there any chance you are telling yourself some of these retirement lies? I’ll be honest, I’m telling myself some different retirement lies and relying on some wishful thinking about the future, but I am also increasing our retirement savings every year, doing my best not to bury my head in the sand.

Send the Fossils Home

18 Oct

We all know that I am fascinated by paleontology, considering how many times I’ve written about it. And the truth is, I’d rather not have to travel as far as Mongolia to see a specific kind of dinosaur skeleton (well, that’s not entirely true, Mongolia is one of those places on my life list), but no matter how much I like convenience, I can’t have any support for people who steal, especially not people who steal things that could be considered national treasures- like fossils from a dinosaur that was only found in Mongolia. Tarbosaurus bataar should be sent home.

The Voice- s3 Battle Rounds 4

17 Oct

Christina used her first steal last night. That was the biggest news from The Voice. There were some difficult decisions for the judges, at least one time when I would have chosen differently than the coach (but I understand the decision), etc. It was a pretty typical night for the battle rounds. There were no standout performances. There might have been a bad performance, but they chose not to show us two battles, so we don’t know for certain. What we do know is that the teams are almost full, and soon it will be time for the knockout rounds.

The Voice- s3 Battle Rounds 3

16 Oct

Last night there were a lot of decent, evenly matched battle rounds. In a couple of cases I had a clear favorite, but a lot of that has to do with my personal preferences, which I know the judges don’t always share. But for the most part, there wasn’t really a “wrong” choice to be had. I think my favorite performance by the contestants was You Give Love a Bad Name (everyone should have to sing Bon Jovi). However, if Cee Lo and Rob Thomas wanted to do an album of Hall & Oates covers, we would so buy it.

MythBusters (sp9 ep2)

15 Oct

Caught the Titanic episode last night before the new episode, and since I’m not a Titanic/James Cameron fan, I thought it was okay. I did like the new episode- earth moving machines and explosions- what’s not to like. Even the small scale tests for waves in trenches were really cool.

As for using balloons as an airbag- not surprised by the result. However, in their control, the driver wearing a seatbelt wouldn’t have survived. I’m pretty certain seatbelts save lives at 35mph all the time, so I’m not sure how accurate their dropping a car from a crane really is.

Blog Feature: Just Ramblin’

13 Oct

It’s been almost a full month since Just Ramblin’ posted anything, which makes me sad. While the posts are not often long, they are lovely. In fact, it was seeing all the pictures on Just Ramblin’ that made me want to have more pictures on Life by Pets. In addition, I was given my first blog “award” by Just Ramblin’, the Creative Capture award for my pictures.

I’m hoping that maybe some folks will see this and head over there to see pictures of Miss Stella and Miss Sadie Lou, and that will remind them they are loved and missed.

Your Money Friday: Gambling

12 Oct

What do you think of gambling? Is it sad? Are the people there just throwing away their money? Or is it a form of entertainment? Are casinos a waste of money or job creators- all the way from construction through the dealers and cocktail waitresses?

Having lived in NV for twelve years, I don’t gamble much. I know how addicting the slots and the poker machines can be. I’ve played them. But as long as it is a form of entertainment, I don’t see anything wrong with gambling. It can be a fun way to spend and evening with friends.

Learning to Cook Online

11 Oct

Love to watch cooking shows? Fascinated by “cooking” with liquid nitrogen? Want to learn both traditional and modern cooking techniques? Do you own or covet Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking?

If you answered yes to more than one of these questions, you might want to check out ChefSteps. ChefSteps is a new, free online cooking school being run by the guys behind Modernist Cuisine. They don’t care if you’re a professional chef with your own set of knives or a curious home chef looking to try some new recipes. It’s a culinary school for all of us.

The Voice (s3- Battle Rounds 2)

10 Oct

Not quite certain what I think about The Voice not showing all the battle rounds. I know that there’s the knock out round this year, which means we have one more round in the same number of shows, but I have to wonder why the extra time wasn’t taken from the Blind Auditions.

I was okay with it when I thought I could log into the website to see the full battles. But no, it was just the same short clip from the show last night. Do we expect the winners of those battles to fall in the knockout round?

The Voice (s3- Battle Rounds 1)

09 Oct

We missed the first half of The Voice last night, but I watched the performances we missed online this morning. C was especially disappointed that we missed Santeria last night as that’s one of his favorite songs.

What I like most about the battle rounds this year is the steal. I’ve commented in past years on the fact that sometimes, a coach manages to put two of their best people up against each other and a really good singer gets knocked out of the competition too early. The steal allows for that person to have the chance to stick around.
