Writing Goals

23 Jul

I recently came to the realization in my writing that I really prefer the short form. I know that given the format of this blog, that shouldn’t seem surprising, but most aspiring writers I know think of themselves as novelists in the making. There is not a whole lot of exposure for short stories out there.

Since I came to the decision that the short form is where I want to focus, I need to set myself goals that don’t involve completing a novel. So I’ve been looking at magazines that accept story submissions. Goal: Publication in Assimov’s Science Fiction

Writing Flash

21 Jul

I love my critique group. They are the biggest reason that my writing continues to improve. But sometimes I need to trust my writing and just go with it.

Today I decided to write and submit a piece of flash fiction to The Molotov Cocktail, an online flash magazine located here at wordpress. At 550 words, there’s not much critique can do for it, without making it longer, turning it in to something its not.

I have realized lately that I really do prefer the short form. Flash is great because I can write and revise it around 2 hours.

Short Story Writing

04 Jul

I’m working on a short story for an anthology. The word limit is 2000 to 5000. Right now I’m at 2300, but according to critique this morning, it needs to expand.

My problem is that while I love writing short stories- I like finishing the story- in my head, the world is bigger than just the one story; there are all these other tangents and characters that I want to explore as well. But my patience with trying to write novels is just not there.

So, I need to tighten and expand, and then submit (actually submitting is pretty key).

Not writing every day

02 Jun

I must get better at writing daily. 100 words is not that many. And once you get used to the format and length, not that difficult to end up at exactly 100 words. I can now eyeball a piece and know if I’m going to be over or not and even have a good guess of how many words I’ll need to remove.

But I’m still not writing every day. I can kind of give myself a pass on the weekends when things get really busy, but weeknights, I’m already in front of the computer. I resolve to do better.

Microfiction Contest

14 May

I used to host a 50 word microfiction contest. I ran it weekly, and after a while, there were very few entries and fewer votes for the winning entry, so I stopped. But I do love microfiction. I love the challenge of telling a complete story in so few words. At some point, I will probably post 100 word microfiction stories here.

Today I want to tell you about another microfiction contest. The entry fee is $15; you could win $500. Unlike my contest, which required exactly 50 words, this one calls for 100 Words or Fewer. So get writing.

Sunday Morning Critique

08 May

I have been part of a writing critique group that meets every other Sunday morning for about 5 years now. It is made up of some of the most amazing people I have ever met. It has exposed me to styles and genres of writing that I would normally shy away as not my thing.

The only problem with the group is that it meets at 9am, and I get up at 7am in order to go write before the group meets. Once I’m there, I’m glad I am, but oh how I hate thinking about it on Saturday night.
