On Being a Feminist (6)

11 Dec

My father asked me if he had ever told me I couldn’t do something because I was a girl. He never did. But the messages we pass on to our children aren’t always conscious. What follows is not meant to be a critique of my parents, simply a notation of how we foster different attitudes for our daughters than we do our sons.

Our family started collections for my brother and I. His: model airplanes and baseball caps. Mine: perfume bottles and dolls. We both went shooting with our father. I was never given my own gun; my brother was.

Being Thankful

25 Nov

I am thankful for a wonderful husband, two sweet and cuddly (if not always good) dogs, loving parents, a brother who I may not always agree with, and good friends. I am thankful for the roof over our heads, the good job that helps keep it there, and the bounty in our lives that we are able to share with loved ones.

Recently I have been a little too stressed, too caught up in everything. Today, I take the time to remind myself exactly how wonderful my life is. Sometimes, 100 words isn’t  enough, but it will have to do.

Too Many Clothes

24 Nov

There’s an experiment called Six Items or Less, where you go an entire month wearing only six items of clothing. There are some items you don’t count- underwear, shoes, etc.,  but for the most part, you pick six items of clothing and only wear them exclusively for a month. Often, no one notices.

While I am tempted by the six item clothing diet, I don’t know that I could do it. Still, I do have too many clothes. In just the last two weeks, I’ve taken over $200 worth of clothes to Goodwill, and my closet is still too full.

Running the numbers

15 Jul

A friend of mine just got a job offer where compensation is base plus commission. Since she is in sales, this is pretty standard. Since she is the primary earner in her family, though, it can be a bit scary.

The company has given her two offers. The first with a low (especially for her) base, but a high commission percentage. The second offer has a much higher base (still not what she had been making) but a significantly lower commission percentage.

I ran the numbers to find the break even point, and I have to say, play the percentages.

Transitions

01 Jul

Tomorrow is my last day in my current position. Starting after the holiday, I will have my first post-MBA job as a manager. I am excited but sad to be leaving my current. I have been in this position for over 5 years, longer than I’ve ever been at any other job.

Today I worked 10 hours without a lunch. Because our company has a long process for getting positions approved for re-hire, my boss will not have my replacement in place before I leave. So instead, I have trying to get all of July’s work done in two days.

Excel

06 May

I love Excel. If I have an option between doing something in Word and doing it in Excel, I’ll do it in Excel, even if Word is technically easier. I enjoy manipulating data, using it to tell a story. (I am a geek.)

I spent most of this morning playing in Excel, and I learned some new things. First, the lookup function is only capable of searching the first 15,000 lines of data. When you’re searching 30,000 lines, that’s an issue. Also searching 15,000 lines of data (at a time) to fill in 10,000 blanks makes your computer run slow.
