The Voice s4 – Blind Auditions Night 4

03 Apr

I really like that contestants who don’t make it on the Voice the first time round can come back and try again.

Some of the people who made it on last night did not seem as talented as others we have seen this year, and I often have to think that perhaps there’s something that is not translating well via television. But the joy of the Voice is that everyone we see (whether a chair turns or not) is talented. There are no train wrecks.

Also- do we have more country singers this year? It kind of seems like it.

The Voice s4 – Blind Auditions Night 3

02 Apr

Apparently no one from The Voice reads this blog. I say that because right after I praised them last week for not montaging anyone who made the teams, this week, they montaged like half the contestants who made it onto teams. Best guess is that those people don’t have “compelling” stories, in that they are just regular folks- they weren’t abandoned on doorsteps or old friends of Blake’s. But why show me the kid who is otherwise a professional mover that doesn’t make it if you’re not going to show me the equally boring (but more talented) person who does?

The Voice s4 – Blind Auditions Night 2

27 Mar

Night 2 of the blind auditions was only one hour long, but we got to see the developing “alliance” between Blake and Usher.

I really like Midas Whale, but so far, no duo has ever made it out of the battle rounds, so they’ve got a long road ahead of them.

One thing I didn’t mention yesterday, but that I am really liking is that this year, so far, they have shown us the performances of all the contestants that have been chosen by the coaches. We’ve only gotten those who were passed over in the montage. I appreciate that.

The Voice s4 – Blind Auditions Night 1

26 Mar

The Voice is back, and you know I was glued to my DVR. They put Shakira in Cee-Lo’s old seat and Usher in Christina’s. Maybe the producers were hoping that by switching things up we would not notice they replaced a black male R&B singer and a blonde Latina diva with a blonde Latina diva and a black male R&B singer. But enough about that- the only thing that really matters is the dynamic between the coaches. Blake and Adam kept up their love/hate relationship and Shakira and Usher both seemed to fit right in, each playing to their strengths.

Why #MythBusters Should be Required Viewing

27 Feb

Back in 2007, Mythbusters did a show (ep 85) about bullets in an oven. Once the oven got hot enough, those bullets exploded- not with lethal force, so the myth was busted -with the shell casings causing the most damage.

Why do I bring this up now? Because just last week, a woman in Tampa Bay, Florida, was injured when she was shot by an oven. A magazine in the oven exploded, spraying her with casing fragments.

She was preheating the oven at a friend’s house, a friend who neglected to tell her he stored his ammo in the oven.

The Voice s3 And the Winner Is….

19 Dec

I’m not surprised Nicholas David came in 3rd. Considering I thought he would have to be a judges’ save to even make the top 12 (America you have happily surprised me by voting him to the finals), and that his Monday night performance wasn’t great.

Terry also stumbled on Monday night, and while we all love classic rock, is there a market for new classic rock?

Since making the top 12 (I didn’t think she would) Cassadee has been strong and solid. Rarely was there a night I thought she was “off”. Congratulations Cassadee Pope, Season 3 winner, The Voice

The Voice s3 Final Performances

18 Dec

The opening tribute to the Newtown victims brought me close to tears. It was done beautifully.

I love Nicholas but did not like his opening number. Terry’s voice seemed weak (and when is Terry’s voice weak) on Broken Wings. Cassadee ended with Cry, but that meant two of her final three performances were country ballads. Does she want to be a country singer?

Blake once again showed why he is my favorite coach by making the duets about his contestants. I thought Play that Funky Music was a great song choice for Nicholas, but Cee Lo never let him shine.

The Voice s3 Semi-Final Elmination

12 Dec

In the past, the Voice finals have consisted of 4 people- one for each coach. This season, it will be 3 people, as chosen by America. I am thrilled with America’s choices.

If I have a favorite, it is Nicholas David. I love that he’s not your standard pop music competition show fodder. But truth is, I will be happy regardless of who wins this year. All three contestants are fabulous.

I loved that this season we have seen all of last season’s finalists and know they each have record deals. That may be my favorite thing about The Voice.

The Voice s3 Semi-Finals

11 Dec

Starting with the caveat that all four singers who made it to the Voice semi-finals are incredibly talented and have the ability to do great things, Trevin was once again the weakest link. I think part of it was song choice. I love Wind Beneath My Wings, but he did not do anything with it to stand out. Less than 5 minutes after watching the performance, I had forgotten it.

Nicholas David, singing to his family, was powerful and tear inducing. Both Cassaddee and Terry brought their styles to the songs they sang. Looking forward to next week’s final performances.

The Voice s3 Top 6 Eliminations

05 Dec

It is down to CeeLo and Blake. I was not surprised by Melanie going home. She’s a talented young girl, but she’s more suited to indie pursuits than pop stardom. I was stunned by Amanda going home.

Mind you, all of the top 6 are incredibly talented, so I’m not saying Amanda deserved it more than Nicholas or anyone else. However, she is an attractive woman with a powerful voice. Nicholas is a middle aged, kind of funny looking guy, whose style is not quite mainstream. I am thrilled he’s still in the competition, but sad to see Amanda go.
