WFTDA Western Regionals: the Venue

12 Oct

Rollin’ on the River was held at Memorial Auditorium in downtown Sacramento. It was built in 1926, and has a lovely ceiling typical of that time frame. It also has cushioned stadium seating. I should have researched this. We packed for bleachers- bringing bleacher seats and stadium cushions on the theory that we would need them to survive 3 days of roller derby. Our travel could have been much easier without those added items.

While the auditorium could have used larger seats (people were smaller in the 20s), it was overall the loveliest venue I’ve ever watched roller derby in.

WFTDA Western Regionals: Oly Rollers vs Rocky Mountain Rollergirls

11 Oct

There was no doubt going in to the weekend that the final bout of the tournament would be Oly vs Rocky Mountain. No other team was quite on their level.

I’d like to say it was exciting, but exciting wasn’t the word (especially since I didn’t have a stake in who won, though the crowd was clearly rooting for Rocky Mountain). There were lead changes, but it wasn’t a bout that came down to the last couple of jams. It was a good, hard fought bout, between two evenly matched teams. Either could walk away with the prize at Championships.

WFTDA Western Regionals: Rose City Rollers vs B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls

10 Oct

Sadly, we missed the Rat City vs Denver game due to car troubles. We arrived just as it ended, and learned that Rat City won the bout.

Rose City vs BAD was disappointing. We hadn’t expected much from Rose City vs Oly, but vs BAD, we thought they would return to the form they were in vs Rat City. We were wrong. For one pass late in the 2nd half, they were able to put together a wall, but it didn’t even last the whole jam. BAD didn’t run away with the bout, but the outcome was rarely in question.

WFTDA Western Regionals: Saturday

09 Oct

Saturday was a day of blow outs. It started with Rat City beating the host team, Sacred City, by over 300 points. They set a WFTDA tournament record with 39 points scored in a single jam. Later, Rat City took down Tuscon. Denver defeated Duke City in the morning and Jet City in the afternoon.

This was the first real look at both the Oly and Rocky Mountain teams. Friday, they had each won without breaking a sweat. Neither sweated much more in taking out the previous day’s winners – Oly over Rose City and Rocky Mountain over the BAD Girls.

WFTDA Western Regionals: Denver Roller Dolls vs B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls

08 Oct

Over the course of the tournament, the Denver Roller Dolls (3rd seed) and the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls (6th seed) switched places in the ranks. Denver was expecting to go to Championships in 3rd place, so the loss to the BAD Girls was particularly hard.

The loss was made worse by a questionable call by the officials. At one point, split pack was called, at which point, the BAD defense should have let the Denver jammer through, giving her four more points. But they didn’t, and the frustrated jammer called off the jam. Denver lost the bout by 4 points.

WFTDA Western Regionals: Rose City vs Rat City

06 Oct

Rose City came out with an amazing defense and shut Rat City down. They had a couple outstanding jams and went into the half with a 60 point lead. The second half, Rat City returned with a vengeance and finally played their game. ReAnimateher put on the star; points went on the board. But it wasn’t enough. Rose City by 12 points.

Most frustrating bout of the tournament. Rose City never got their defense together again; Rat City found their offense. Had this gone the other way, Rat City would probably be on their way to Championships (in 3rd place).

Rollin’ on the River: Western Regional Roller Derby Tournament

05 Oct

First, the results (this may seem backwards, but as I’m not posting this until 2 days after the event ended, we’ll get this question out of the way).

Going to the national championships in Chicago in November, we have:

1st Place: Rocky Mountain Roller Girls (2nd seed)

2nd Place: Oly Rollers (1st seed, defending national champions)

3rd Place: B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls (6th seed)

Finishing out the top six

4th Place: Rose City Roller Girls (4th seed)

5th Place: Rat City Roller Girls (5th seed)

6th Place: Denver Roller Dolls (3rd seed)

More to come on the venue and bouts.

GD vs SW (part 2)

06 Jun

The Wenches opened the night with twenty minutes of amazing defense. Without those first bouts, Danger wins, but the Wenches played great and then stayed good.

Nasty Trick and Juliet Bravo managed to shut down Danger’s biggest weapon, Reanimateher all night long. She had lead jammer position only once or twice. Carmen Getsome was the only Danger jammer who ever really got it going, while Juliet and Jalepeno Business poured on the heat for the Wenches and giving Anya Heels the jammer’s star whenever some energy was needed.

It was a closer match then the 20 point score differential indicated.

Grave Danger v Sockit Wenches

05 Jun

Derby is a lot like the NFL. Undefeated in the regular season means nothing in the playoffs and defense wins championships. Tonight, undefeated Grave Danger took on the Sockit Wenches in the Rat City Rollergirls’ championship bout. The teams had met twice before, in the preseason when the Wenches won the half length bout, and in the regular season when Danger won in the final seconds.

If bouts were judged like UFC fights, Danger might have won, but in derby, like football, the scoreboard rules. Early amazing defense by the Wenches earned them a lead Danger just could not overcome.

A Busy Day

05 Jun

I am an extrovert, but only barely. On the Meyers-Briggs test, my E score is under 10. While I love seeing friends and hanging out with them, I need down time. Last weekend, I took five days off and got in some down time because this weekend, especially today, is crazy.

Charles has a meeting with his new census team. I have a massage therapy appointment. Then we have a D&D game. We’ll leave there, come home, walk the dogs, and then head out to the roller derby championship match. It will be a good day, but a long day.
