“Dogoirs”

01 Dec

They’re called “dogoirs”, and they’re all the rage. I thought they were books about people and dogs. The article title references Steinbeck, and talks about some modern “dogoirs” but skips my two favorite authors of this genre.

James Herriot: For an animal lover, all his books are worth reading, but Dog Stories is the one I love best.

Jon Katz: I’d argue that more than Marley and Me’s author John Grogan, Katz started the current trend of life with a dog books. A Dog Year, his second work to feature his dogs, came out in 2002, three years before Marley.

Being Thankful

25 Nov

I am thankful for a wonderful husband, two sweet and cuddly (if not always good) dogs, loving parents, a brother who I may not always agree with, and good friends. I am thankful for the roof over our heads, the good job that helps keep it there, and the bounty in our lives that we are able to share with loved ones.

Recently I have been a little too stressed, too caught up in everything. Today, I take the time to remind myself exactly how wonderful my life is. Sometimes, 100 words isn’t  enough, but it will have to do.

Walking the Dogs

04 Oct

My dogs have become entitled. We used to never take them on walks, due to Moree’s on-leash aggression. We did go to the dog park on a regular basis, and Moree and Smokey would run to their hearts’ content (or legs’ failure). After we lost Moree, we got a puppy.

The first time we took her to the dog park, she tried to leave with another family (and their puppy). So, we started doing daily walks in order to drain some of her energy. Now, if we’re both putting on shoes, the dogs are convinced they’re going on a walk.

Cuteness as a survival skill

22 Jun

The puppy is lucky she’s cute. Tonight has been full of the barky, destruction, and peeing in the house. The peeing in the house is our fault. We closed her in our room using the child gate and mistook her scratching as simple desire to escape.

Now that summer is upon us, we have to find a way to keep her in the back of the house without turning our room into a sauna. We have the child gate on top of a giant bin. She may be able to squeeze between the wall and bin, but she hasn’t yet.

Normally, I’m an optimist

21 May

I’ve always been just a little paranoid about my dogs. If I wake up in the middle of the night and they don’t react, I’ll put a hand on their side to make sure they’re breathing. Losing Moree (our Aussie) last November, 5-6 years earlier than we’d been expecting, just made me worse.

Right now, Smokey (our lab/pit mix) has hurt his leg. He can’t get up on the bed with us, and that makes me sad, and then I get even more paranoid. It’s a vicious cycle. How is it that I’ve become a pessimist about my pets’ health?

My Charity Idea

15 May

Someday, when I am more organized, I will start a charity. I will call it City Pets (or some such thing), and we will be devoted to helping the pets of the homeless.

I know a lot of people think that the homeless shouldn’t have pets when they can’t care for themselves, but if I lost my job and my home, I can not imagine also losing my dogs. The unconditional love they provide is a key to staying sane. My goal would be to provide pet food, help with veterinary care, and eventually help with shelters and transitional housing.
