Movie Review: Brave

29 Nov

We finally saw Brave the night before Thanksgiving. What can I say? A Disney Princess movie that does not end in marriage- what is the world coming to?  AND there was an actual mother in the movie- not a wicked step-mother, but a loving mother. In the past, only Disney animal movies have been allowed these things. It’s like my childhood has been completely upended, and I am thrilled.

I loved bothMeridaand her mother. I loved that the central love story was the one between parent and child, especially in a movie that’s aimed at, you know, children.

Movie Review: Skyfall

22 Nov

I know, I am reviewing a movie while it’s still in theaters; it’s a Thanksgiving day miracle.

First off, I think in Daniel Craig, Sean Connery finally has some real competition in the sexiest Bond every category.

Skyfall was a really enjoyable movie. Yes, it’s a little darker than most Bond films, but all the Craig Bond movies have been. It felt very much in line with where Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace had been taking us.

Judi Dench as M was, as always, wonderful.

And the little bits of tribute to the “old” Bond days were mostly charming.

Movie Review: Quantum of Solace

01 Nov

In preparation for Skyfall, we saw Quantum of Solace. I enjoy Daniel Craig as Bond, and think he gives Connery some competition as the sexiest Bond.

Two is not enough to make a trend, but something I’ve noticed in the newest Bond movies is that if Bond has sex with the girl, she dies. I’m pretty sure in the earlier movies, not every one of Bond’s conquests was killed.

In QoS, the woman that was meant to be the “Bond Girl” he had more of a big brother/protective relationship with, and the conquest was, literally, a throw away character.

Movie Review: The Avengers

01 Oct

Because we are behind the times at our house, when Avengers was coming out last summer, we had people telling us- Oh, you need to see Captain America before Avengers. Last night, right before we watched it, J asked to make sure we’d seen Thor, as he felt that was the most important prerequisite. We had. We’d also seen the Ed Norton Hulk (I loved Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner), and the firstIronMan.

Honestly, I don’t really think we really needed to see any of them. They added something, but the movie stood on its own just fine.

Movie Review: The Warrior’s Way

25 Sep

What I liked most about The Warrior’s Way was the fight choreography- especially in the beginning. It felt very true to the many martial arts movies I have seen that weren’t made by Americans. It was shot beautifully, and certainly paid tribute to many films that have gone before it.

From there, we entered the American West. It wasn’t exactly an honest picture of the time period, but this movie wasn’t meant to be a historically accurate depiction of anything.

The ending was emotionally satisfactory, even if the postscript scenes made little sense, even within the context of the movie.

Movie Review: The New Muppet Movie

24 Sep

I know I am probably one of the last people on earth to have seen this movie. And it is extra sad because the roomie owns it on blu-ray, but I do not care. I LOVED the new Muppet Movie. I mean, I was pretty sure I was going to just because it was a muupet movie (I grew up on them), but this was overall really well done and had some absolutely fabulous little moments. Even small roles and cameos were cast perfectly, with great little one liners here and there. It is a treasure trove of a movie.

Movie Review: Immortals

15 Aug

C didn’t tell me the name of the movie he was putting on last night, and I wasn’t paying much attention when the opening credits rolled. Because of that, I didn’t realize until the start of the final climatic fight scene that the movie was Immortals. Or what I should say, is I hadn’t realized it was a main stream movie release.

We watch a lot of cheesy similarly themed B movies, and I thought this was one, despite the fact that the production values were high. But the acting and the script, not so much. I still enjoyed it.

Movie Review: The Island

07 Aug

I expected The Island to be a sci-fi version of The Lottery. It was, but more like a version of The Lottery mixed with Never Let Me Go. And if you know the short story and the novel, well, there are no twists left in the movie for you, so I’m sorry if I spoiled it for you.

It was a mostly enjoyable movie. I adore Ewan McGregor and Scarlet Johansson wasn’t bad. Sean Bean was the villain. I love him, and I know he plays a great bad guy, but I do wish he’d get more good guy roles.

Aurora, Colorado

24 Jul

Tomorrow I will have a review up of the new Batman. But before it goes up, I wanted to say something about the shooting in Colorado. In no way do I believe it was related to the movie. Batman simply happened to be the movie with a midnight showing and a packed house.

It was a terrible thing that happened in Aurora. But it had nothing to do with Batman, movies, midnight showings, or even with the availability of guns. (The shooter’s apartment was rigged with bombs.) It only had to do with one sick individual who has been caught.

Movie Review: 21 Jump Street

18 Jul

I wasn’t a huge fan of the original21 Jump Street, as I didn’t live somewhere that I could  watch it until after Richard Grieco left the show. (And no, I didn’t watch his spin-off Booker, but then, no one did.) But the season or two I saw, I liked.

This last weekend, we watched the new21 Jump Streetmovie. Did I like it? Not so much. The show was a drama, the movie was a comedy filled with boy humor.

The show appealed to girls. The movie was made for boys. No wonder it wasn’t a huge hit.
