Professional Responsibility

06 Apr

I am a fan of sports, specifically, sports where there is a lot of hitting- roller derby, hockey, and football. And while I am a fan of these sports, I do have concerns about the health of the players, especially around concussions. But I am even more concerned about concussions among the youth players of these games.

That’s why, even though I am not a Penguins fan, I am thrilled with the Pittsburgh Penguins’ new program to provide baseline concussion testing for all youth hockey players in the city. We can change the culture when we start with the kids.

The SuperBowl @ Home

07 Feb

Stayed home to watch the SuperBowl because I’m sick. I do miss the communal feeling of watching with a group, but I still enjoyed the game. I’d been saying for a while I thought it was Aaron Rodgers’s year, so I’m happy with the Green Bay win.

There weren’t any commercials that I loved, but I liked the “meta-ness” of the Motorola tablet commercial, and thought the VW new generation Beetle commercial was cute. I was amused that we started with an Eminem commercial where he told us he didn’t do commercials, and later we had a second Eminem commercial.

Late: Weekend in Review

18 Jan

I hate being sick. Nothing seems to go right when I don’t feel well, today being a case in point. I just have not felt like writing an entry. Coming up with a topic, let alone writing 100 words, has just seemed like too much work.

So here’s a (late) hodgepodge from the weekend:

I’m excited for a Super Bowl without Brady or a Manning. I’m thinking Packers/Steelers.

I have the best massage therapist. I wish I could afford to go more often.

I still love roller derby, and am thrilled that they’re getting full write ups in the Examiner

Seahawks vs Saints

09 Jan

I am a Raiders fan, so despite living in the Seattle area, I was not expecting much from the Seahawks in this playoff game. I wasn’t offended by their losing record, like so many (though the Raiders were 8-8), but I really was assuming a blowout.

The game started as expected, with the Saints scoring on their first two drives, one of them coming from a Hasselbeck interception. But then, Hasselbeck was able to answer touchdown for touchdown, and the Hawks defense finally showed up.

It’s just a reminder, record doesn’t matter in the playoffs, just who wins this game.

Fantasy Football

13 Sep

For the first year in many years, I don’t have a fantasy football team this year. It’s only the opening week, and I already miss it.

I like the competition amongst friends, and I like that it makes almost all football games more interesting. I rarely see my team play (they most often play at the same time as the home team) and I can’t afford the tv package that would change that. I still follow the home team, but I have come to follow other teams and players, having “owned” those players in previous years. I miss the investment.
