Blog Feature: Little Seattle Obersvationist

22 Dec

Little Seattle Observationist is written by a friend of mine. It’s not really a pet blog, but recently, she added a new friend, Harvey, to her household. So now she has a Formosan Mountain Dog (Basenji/terrier mix) and a cat, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the blog start drifting toward her adventures with her animals. But besides writing about the fact that picking up dog poop is not that gross, she also writes about her life and events in Seattle.

Take a moment to swing on by and congratulate her and the cat and their newfound family member.

Blog Feature: No Dog About It Blog

08 Dec

Let’s just start with the fact that Mel’s blog is terrific at all times. She writes from the heart. And you can see how much she loves her dogs. But after having experienced having a missing dog a year ago, she shines now as an advocate for missing dogs everywhere, and a great source of information for their owners. Take this post on why your lost dog may not run back to you- it’s full of compassion for pets and their people. So thank you Mel for sharing your experience and being such a strong voice for a great cause.

Blog Feature: You Did What With Your Weiner

24 Nov

We judge people by their dogs. We think differently about a woman with a Chihuahuathan one with a Lab. A guy with a Pit Bull is very different, at least in our minds, than the guy with a Border Collie. If you have small dogs, there are lots of things people think you can’t do with your dog. At You Did What With Your Weiner, they are working on proving those expectations false, doing their best to prove that even little dogs can have big adventures.

In fact, on Thanksgiving, they were out hiking snow covered mountains, mini-Dachshunds included.

Blog Feature: Oh, Corbin

27 Oct

On some level, it’s kind of nice to realize I haven’t featured one of my favorite blogs, yet. it makes writing easy. Corbin is a beautiful Pit mix who is one of the happiest dogs around. He often shares his happiness with foster dogs, almost all of them also Pit mixes- and guess what, everyone is happy and playful and gets along just fine.

Oh, Corbin is mostly told from Corbin’s point of view, though he occasionally lets ‘the mama” write something. This post, from two weeks ago, has almost no words, though, and is absolutely one of my favorites.

Blog Feature: Just Ramblin’

13 Oct

It’s been almost a full month since Just Ramblin’ posted anything, which makes me sad. While the posts are not often long, they are lovely. In fact, it was seeing all the pictures on Just Ramblin’ that made me want to have more pictures on Life by Pets. In addition, I was given my first blog “award” by Just Ramblin’, the Creative Capture award for my pictures.

I’m hoping that maybe some folks will see this and head over there to see pictures of Miss Stella and Miss Sadie Lou, and that will remind them they are loved and missed.

Blog Feature: I Still Want More Puppies

29 Sep

If you can’t guess what I still Want More Puppies is about then you might have reading comprehension problems. I love her humor, her terrible, usually very geeky, pet names, the multiple links, and, of course, the pictures of her puppies. But this week, it was a guest post that really caught my attention. Keep Calm and Carry a Blanket was written in honor of Senior Pet Health month, and it is a loving tribute to the author’s senior dog.

I only hope we are giving Howie the same kind of love and care that she is giving her Cleo.

Blog Feature: Heart Like a Dog

15 Sep

Heart Like a Dog is Jodi Stone’s new site. It is a pretty place, but it’s not the way the site looks that keeps me coming back. It’s her writing. Her obvious love for her dogs, and the fact that she is honest about her training issues makes me feel less like a dog parent failure when my 3 act up.
Today, Jodi is asking for advice on how to get a dog to take a treat without the accompanying human fingers. I have a little experience in that, so was happy I could contribute to the knowledge base there.

Blog Feature: The Poodle (and dog) Blog

01 Sep

I love The Poodle (and dog) Blog mostly because she finds animal stories in the news and blogs about them. Since many of these items are regional, I’d never hear about them if it weren’t for her.

For example, this week there’s a post about PETA losing a lawsuit against the Happy Cows  of California (PETA claimed false advertising- no way the cows were happy) and one about a woman fired for taking good pictures of animals in the care of New York City’s animal control department. (Okay, that’s not the reason they give, but it seems to fit reality.)

Blog Feature: The Straightness of Trees

18 Aug

I found The Straightness of Trees during a blog hop. I don’t remember exactly when. It likely had something to do with Pit Bulls. One of the things I noticed right away, besides the great name, was the fact that she too had lost a dog to hemangiosarcoma, the same cancer that took our Smokey angel.

She’s only been writing sporadically recently, but I am always happy when I see a new post. This last post especially made me happy for her. She has finally realized that she has a job she truly loves. Late Bloomer or not, that’s wonderful.

Responsible Breeding

08 Aug

If you’ve ever thought about getting a new dog, you’ve heard the arguments adopting or purchasing from a responsible breeder. But what makes a responsible breeder. One very important criteria is that the breeder does genetic testing on their breeding pairs so as not to pass on genetic disorders. In Finlandor Brazil, one in every three Brazilian Terriers carries a mutation that could lead to a skeletal disorder in puppies that doesn’t allow them to stand or walk. A new test will allow breeders to test their dogs in order to prevent this disease from ever affecting another puppy.
