Do You Want to Play a Game?

Our mortgage agent sends us these little newsletters occasionally. The most recent one has sections on both talking to your parents about money and teaching your kids about money. One of the tools for teaching kids about money is VirtualStockExchange.com, where you can participate in games, or even create private games where you can “compete” against other players. Here’s the thing- we all know I know almost nothing about the stock market, so I actually thinkread more…

Stock Market Project – Month 6

Money this month went into Jack in the Box – mostly because they own Qdoba, which I like much better than Chipotle. I think next month, I’ll invest in Coke because I swear my family could keep them in business all by ourselves. I have also settled on using the NASDAQ website for all of my stock looking up needs. It has all the stocks (not just the ones on their exchange) and is really easyread more…

Stock Market Project – Month 5

Turns out that back in mid-March, Zipcar was bought out by the Avis group.  Oops, there goes one of my stocks. I never saw any news on how that was handled, so basically, I decided that I had sold it at it’s last value, and was not charged transaction fee. The Stock Market Project – Month 4

You know how I kept talking about doing analysis on my project based on my Computational Finance class? Not happening this month. Today was my first real day of administrative leave, and while I spent it productively (applying for jobs, watching lectures for a Coursera course, and going to the dog park), I barely managed to check the stock prices and to decide what new stock I wanted to invest in this month. The new stockread more…

The Stock Market Project – Month 3

March- time to throw another imaginary $200 at the stock market. And this month, I need it to be imaginary, as we really don’t have $200 to spare. (Well, we do, but then our savings would be even more miserable, and I don’t think I could actually bring myself to invest if I weren’t comfortable with my cash savings levels, even if the investment has the potential to bring in more money.) Last month, I announcedread more…

The Stock Market Project- Month 2

It’s February! I get another $200 to throw at the stock market. This is exciting and depressing. You see, I’ve been reading some things about Amazon that I really like, so I’d like to be able to buy some Amazon stock, but it’s currently going for over $260/share. I don’t have enough to buy even one tiny bit. In addition, in talking to some friends who work in the game industry, I decided that it wouldread more…

The Stock Market Project- Getting Started

I have always wanted to invest in the stock market- it just seems cool. And I’ve loved the projects I’ve had to do in various classes where we got a ton of fake money to invest in stocks and then tracked our progress over the course of a semester. I did this both in high school senior government class and again in my MBA program. But both times, we were given a ridiculously high number –read more…
