Goals

9 Things in 9 Months

cherryblossomsAbout a month ago, my friend Jana at JanaSays posted her 40 by 40 list. Jana has a couple of years before she turns 40. I have 9 months. There is no way I am accomplishing 40 things in 9 months, but, I might be able to accomplish 9 things in 9 months, so here are some things I want to do before I turn 40 this coming December.

  • Take kids to Disneyland

This is kind of cheating, as the timeshare is booked, the plane tickets are bought, and the rental car is reserved. But I am very much looking forward to it.

  • Complete the first draft of my novella

I need to motivate myself to do this. I am hoping that the consolidated blog will help get my writing juices flowing again. I am over half way through the story, so if I actually write in the mornings before my critique group, I can get this finished. I will still need to edit it, but I have yet to finish a story longer than 5,000-10,000 words, so I really want to get this done.

  • Stay in my job for over 1 year

I know this doesn’t seem like it should be a goal, but after spending 8 years with one company, I was out of work for 2 months, worked for 6 months, and then was out of work again for 9 months. I really need to hit that one year mark in a job again.

  • Lose 15lbs

A couple of years ago, I lost 60lbs. I stalled out about 20lbs away from my target weight. Since then, I have regained 10 of those pounds. I am working on getting myself back on track for weight loss, and if I can lose 15lbs by my 40th birthday, I will weigh less at 40 than I have since I was 22.

  • Buy a new house

We are currently getting an out of state rental property ready to go on the market. Once that is sold, we will use the money from it as a down payment on a new (to us) home up here, without selling our current home. At this point in time, I don’t know if we’ll rent out the current house, or just be able to fix it up after we’ve moved out, but I am pretty excited by the idea.

  • Take a University course for fun

One of the benefits of being a University employee is that I can take undergraduate classes for free. I would love to take a non-western History course, or a writing course, or just some class I find really interesting.

  • Attend FinCon2015

The timing is the one thing that makes this uncertain. We start our fall quarter only a week and a half before FinCon. My girls will have just back to school, as well, so no chance of making it a family vacation.

  • Go camping

This one is not so much for me as for the girls. They ask about going camping. They indicate an interest in going camping. The problem is, I can’t sleep on the hard ground. But, we live very near some absolutely beautiful camping areas, and spending the weekend out in the trees nea
r a lake does sound pretty nice, so hoping we can make this happen this summer.

  • Complete an arts & crafts project

I used to cross-stitch. Now, I buy cross-stitch patterns, start them, and then leave them sitting around. I want to complete something. But maybe not one of the complex patterns I already have. In working on clearing out our basement, we came upon a latch hook of my name from when I was a kid. Maybe something like that for each of the girls.
