Pet Blogger Challenge 2013

January 10, 2013 | Filed under: Inspired By

1. How long have you been blogging and provide a link to your post from last year’s Pet Blogger Challenge so we can refresh our memories.

I’ve been blogging here at Life by Pets for just a little over 2 years. To find out about why I started the blog, you can read my post for last year’s Pet Blogger Challenge

2. What do you consider the most important goals you set out in last year’s post?

The most important goals were probably growing my relationships with other pet bloggers and being more involved in the pet blogging community. Both of those are once again on my goal list for this year (Primed for the New Year).

3. Have you made progress toward those goals, or have your goals changed over the past year?

I definitely have more and better relationships with other bloggers, though obviously, I’d like to do more. And I certainly wasn’t as involved in the community as I would have liked, but I was somewhat involved and hope to do better this year.

Another semi-goal I had was to make money off of my blogs. A trip to a blogging conference for personal finance bloggers helped me to realize that isn’t actually something that is important to me. I blog for two main reasons- 1) I can’t not write. 2) I love talking with other people about topics that interest me.

4. How often do you post?

On this blog, I post Tuesday and Thursday mornings. I’ve recently started taking part in Wordless Wednesday and Black & White Sunday. In addition, every Saturday I do a blog post round up that includes my favorite posts of the week from both pet bloggers and personal finance bloggers. It appears on Life by Pets every other week.

5. Has your opinion of blogging on a schedule or as the spirit moves you changed?

Not really. I need deadlines to be productive. However, I have started a writing blog this year, and I do only post there as the spirit moves me. That does mean that I think it has less than 10 posts on it.

If you publish on a schedule, why? How strict are you about your publishing deadlines? What do you do for inspiration when it feels like you’ve covered every topic?

As a procrastinator, I really need a schedule, otherwise, I’d rarely post. I try to be pretty strict with myself about deadlines, but sometimes I need the deadline to be VERY close in order for the writing juices to be flowing, so I’ll post a little late. Usually not more than an hour or so later than planned.

Luckily my dogs never stop doing new things, or making me think new things. However, sometimes, I really do just pull a blank. On those occasions I post pictures or try to post links to interesting news about animals, like baby sea otter videos from the local aquarium.

If you don’t publish on a schedule, why? How do you think your decision affects your audience? How do you know when a topic is “post-worthy?”

For the writing blog, it’s because I want to make sure what I say is worth saying. Writing fiction is what I love, but it’s also very hard work. Trying to write about writing on a schedule would likely just frustrate me and put me off writing fiction.

I guess I know something there is post worthy if it’s something I actually want to write about and put there.

6. How much time do you spend writing your blog per week? How much time visiting other blogs? Share your  tips for staying on top of it all.

I probably spend about an hour to ninety minutes writing posts for this blog per week.

I spend probably around 10 hours a week reading other blogs, but that’s pet blogs and personal finance blogs.

I stay on top of it by having a job that 75% of the time simply requires me to be there in case something happens. (20% of the time, I have scheduled work and 5% of the time, something actually happens.)

But I also take time as needed in the evenings. I don’t have kids and the husband and roommate cook dinner most nights, so as long as I can convince the dogs that they don’t need to be in my lap, I can get some writing and reading in.

7. How do you measure the success of a post and of your blog in general (comments, shares, traffic)?

I mostly measure it by how good I feel about it once it’s been written. I don’t get a lot of comments or traffic, though I love it when it does happen. But if I depended on that to make me feel like a post was successful, I’d spend most of my time feeling like a loser. :-p

Do you look strictly at the numbers, or do you have a way of assessing the quality of those interactions?

I look at the numbers, but the truth is, quality comments are easy to spot. And it’s that quality, that sense of having a conversation, that makes me feel most successful.

8. If you could ask the pet blogging community for help with one issue you’re having with your blog, what would it be?

I don’t know if it’s necessarily an issue, but I’d love to see more blog round ups in the pet blogger community. I enjoy blog hops, but my favorite way to discover new blogs is for bloggers I already respect and enjoy to point out posts they really like.

9. What goals do you have for your blog in 2013?

I want to write guest posts. I want people to guest post here. I want to do 4 giveaways this year. But mostly, I want to be more present in the pet blogging community.

I think blog round ups are a great idea. That's how I find new blogs too. Maybe I'll start doing one monthly starting this month! Thanks for the idea!

I like your idea about connecting more with the pet blogger community and I am going to add that to my list. I too would be totally interested in blog round ups…never did one, but open to it. Looking forward to more connections in 2013

For me, my favorite part of being a bloggers is the communities I then get to be a part of. But I do have to remember a good community requires work from all of it's members, even me. I can't just sit back and enjoy, I have to bring something to the table as well (kind of like a potluck).

Years ago (yes, we have been around for years) bloggers used to have Blog Round ups and Blog Carnivals. Those were fun to participate in. I guess it took someone to organize them and maybe we all just wait for someone else to do it. i don't tend to take the initiative in life.

Carnivals take organizing, yes, though I'm less of a huge fan of them (saying that, I've actually had my own carnival and might bring it back this year), but round ups just require you as the blogger to let us as readers know what other blogs posts you've liked this last week/month, etc

One of the reasons I found blogging at Hands on Home Buyer tough the first time round was because I never found the community among PF bloggers that I experienced in the pet blogging world. I never felt that I found my tribe there.

But you're right that the recommendations from the PF blogging world are really great. I find link posts to be very time consuming. But maybe I'll try to do more of it.

BTW, one pet blogger who does regular shout out posts is Karen F of Doggy Stylish.

To be honest, my weekly round up probably is the post I spend the most time on of all the posts on all three blogs that are updated regularly- so yes- I definitely understand the time it takes.
Finding a community is definitely a key. I had an easier time finding and feeling like I was part of the personal finance blog community because I found the Yakezie network fairly early on (thanks to other friends). I didn't really feel like I had the same type of community (not even via BlogPaws forums) in the pet blogging community, and felt like I had to build that on my own. It was harder, and it's led me to think about "quitting" Life by Pets a lot more often than I think about quitting Dog Ate My Wallet. But I have managed to find a few blogging "friends" here, which helps. And really, where else am I going to get to post all of my pictures of the dogs?

  5. somethingwagging says:

Funny that our experiences are so opposite.

I checked out the Yakezie network early on and didn't quite understand what it was meaning to do. I felt the vision wasn't communicated very clearly. Or at least I didn't quite get it.

And coming from the nonprofit side and having done lots of credit counseling, PF blogs whose every third post is a credit card review make my stomach flip flop.

Coming from the nonprofit world gives me a very different perspective from most PF bloggers. At times it's a real curse. But I'm determined to push through and decide that I do deserve to earn a decent living from what I know. 🙂

I will say that meeting a PF blogger who was also a dog person (and bonus, enjoys opera) was a real eye opener.

      January 12, 2013 at 12:04 pm

I think it helped that I didn't find Yakezie on my own. A friend from a money message board who was starting a PF blog found it, and we kind of joined together.
Personally, I don't like the blogs that are credit card reviews either, and I tend to stop reading or following blogs that have considerable sponsored content. I have no issues with ads on the sites, or personal finance product reviews- for things like Mint.com, etc, but I don't want to read what the company says about their product, I want to read what the blogger thinks.
I think I can refer you to some personal finance blogs that you will like, and I can certainly refer you to PF blogs where the blogger also loves their dogs.
I really think you should check out So Over This (also in today's round up), for a couple of reasons. 1) She has many spoiled, wacky dogs. 2) She quit her job to make it as a writer, couldn't, but found another way to stay self employed (and happier than she's ever been) 3) She has successfully transitioned her personal finance blog into a general blog.
And I agree, you do deserve to earn a decent living from what you know. While earning money from my blogs is not my goal, I do know some pretty amazing people for whom it is, and most of them are more than willing to help others out with what they know/have learned. (My amazing friend Jana from Daily Money Shot started a program called "Bloggers Helping Bloggers" specifically to hook people who want to learn up with the people who have found success.)

Thanks for participating in the PB Challenge. Reading your post is interesting because you bring up some things that I am unfamiliar with – like Blog Round-ups and Blog Carnivals. I'm very familiar with Blog Hops because we do them a lot in the pet blogging community – there seems to be one everyday! I participate in the Saturday Pet Bloggers Hop, which is sponsored by Life with Dogs, Two Little Cavaliers, and Nip and Bones. I didn't have a hard time finding my community, but I think that because I was on Twitter for a full year before I started blogging. In fact, my blog was originally an extension of Follow Friday. It just grew out from there as I continued to add various social networks (Facebook, Google +, LinkedIn and Pinterest). I love social media and tend to spend more time there than actually writing the blog itself. Good luck with your goals in 2012 and Happy Blogging!

A round up is when a blogger goes through the blogs they read and picks out their favorite posts from the last week/month/whatever. Some people just post the links, others (like me) try to say a little something about it- along the lines of why it caught their attention, or what it's about.

A Carnival is when someone posts a theme and then asks people to submit posts they've written that fit that theme. I did one in 2012 with the theme of the cost of pets since I have both pet and personal finance blogs. Carnivals are more like blog hops, since people just submit their posts. It's possible that your post won't get chosen, but not likely.

I do like round ups better, because those tend to reflect what the blogger is really reading.

I tend to think of my blogroll as my representation of what I like to read, but you are right. A round-up of posts would be a good idea. I'm not sure I could commit to a weekly one though. And besides, I haven't updated my blogroll in about five months! 🙂

I had never heard of a Carnival either, is there a link to it (like the blog hop) or is it just someone featuring those posts on their blogs?

I shall ask you this, what type of guest blog would you like to do? Finance or pets?

    1. ErinShanendoah says:
      January 13, 2013 at 8:49 am

With a carnival, someone puts out a call for submissions and bloggers send in links to posts they've written that meet the theme. The person running the carnival then posts links to all of those posts on their blog. Because there are often categories, and sometimes even "judge's favorites", it is all manually done by the blogger hosting the carnival that week. In that sense, there can be quality control in that someone should be reading a post before it gets included and can weed out spam.

As for what kind of guest blog post I would like to do, it would be one that fits in with the site I'm posting on. I don't want my guest post to turn off regular readers of that blog. So for me, it's not is it about pets or personal finances, but does it also fit in with the type of content they normally publish. For example, my guest post for Average Joe was about money lessons from a game we both play because he talks about games and lessons from them on the blog. For The House of Two Bows, I am working on a movie review of the style she does. Or, if the blog owner asked me to write about something in particular- something they find interesting that I know more about, etc, I'm more than happy to do that.

If I were writing a post to "shop" to you (ie- you hadn't asked for it, but I was going to write and send it to you asking to have it posted as a guest post), I would probably do one about writing. Specifically, you asked in one of your NANOWRIMO posts about how writers keep track of where they need to go back and make changes if they decide to change a character's backstory mid novel (or something like that)- so if I had no input from you to begin with about what you would like, that's what I'd put together for you, because I think it's something that would be helpful to you, and fits with the theme of what you write about, even if it's not centered on dogs.

You are seriously wanting to find more pet blogs! Have you got through all 95 on the pet blogger challenge yet?!

To be serious, though, I really enjoy reading blogs I haven't visited before, too. I often use google to find blog databases and check out the pets section. It's amazing how many niches there are in the pet blogosphere, and how we can lead close to separate lives at times!

Thanks so much for participating in the Challenge again this year. I'm sorry to hear that you actually considered shutting down Life by Pets. Finding a group of pet bloggers you really click with takes some time – you have to enjoy their writing style, they have to enjoy yours, you both have to have time to interact, and that's kind of tough to find. It's definitely worth the effort, though.

You have some great goals for 2013, and we're always happy to have guest posts on Take Paws. Doing a "24 hours in my area with your pet" is always useful and a great opportunity to show off some photos of your pup! Good luck in the new year, and we'll be following along on Google Reader.

I used to do blog roundups a while back and I'd like to get back to that. I probably have nearly a hundred blogs in my feed reader I just have to be better about noting my favorite posts and then sharing in a blog roundup. Good luck with your goals this year. I have guest posting on my goal list this year too!

"1) I can’t not write. 2) I love talking with other people about topics that interest me." I love this. And I think it shines through in your blog and your posts. I think of your blog as one where I come to think and be challenged, not just to ooh and ahh or nod my head. I'm so glad you haven't given up.

I have noticed there are different factions within the pet blogging community. I feel like I've been lucky to cross between a couple but there are groups I deliberately avoid. I'm glad to have found you and glad we're connected. But you could have found a more steadfast blogger to hang out with. 😉

You are steadfast where it matters- in taking care of Bella.

I do feel like I've kind of formed my own little community with the blogs I follow regularly and am making friends that way. I am definitely glad to have found you, regardless of how regularly you post. I hope very much to one day meet you and to maybe even see Bella from afar.
