Replacing an Appliance
Ever since we bought this house, 6.5 years ago, C and I have wanted to replace our refrigerator. It is small and not fabulous. But every time we looked at replacing it, we would realize that we could only replace it with another refrigerator exactly like it because of the height issue. The over the fridge cabinets come down far enough that there is only one model of refrigerator that will fit in that space. If we wanted to replace our fridge, it would be with one exactly like it except newer. That wasn’t what we were looking for, so never saw the point in spending the money.
In the next week or two, we will be replacing the refrigerator. Now it isn’t because we want to but because it needs to happen. The fridge has started freezing things kept in the back while barely keeping things up front cold. The door doesn’t always close all the way, even with nothing blocking it, and part of the seal has started to rot away.
However, just because we have to replace it, it doesn’t mean that we want to get an identical model. We want a slightly larger refrigerator. We want one with a bottom drawer freezer. We don’t need side by side doors, but the bottom freezer is something we really want. But whatever we get, it means we have to make some modifications- because the space hasn’t changed size.
In this sense, our previous desire to replace the fridge is paying off. We know not only the new refrigerator we want, we also know what we need to do so that it will fit. Our summer of creating shelving in the basement means that we actually have the ability to clear out the over the fridge cabinets and take them down.
We’ll still have to find storage space for some baking goods (flour, sugar, etc), but I think we’ll be good to go. With any luck, this weekend J will help us take the cabinets down and we’ll head off to the store for a new refrigerator. It’s kind of sad how excited I am about this.
How exciting-we have an issue with a small fridge but as we only rent, we're not really going to purchase one. Instead, I'm stuck with going shopping every week so that the fridge isn't too full and starts leaking. But this has also saved us grocery money so it's kind of good.
Definitely no buying appliances while you rent, unless you're renting a place with w/d hookups but no w/d (and have the landlord's permission). Saving you grocery money is good. I don't know that our small fridge has had that kind of effect. It might have if we didn't have a chest freezer downstairs, I guess.
That's exciting you get to buy a new fridge. We've not had to do that yet, but we did buy an extra freezer to keep in our garage several years ago and love having it now.
We bought a fridge 9 years ago when we bought our first house, but that fridge stayed with the house (and it wasn't a great fridge as he didn't have much money at the time). We do have a chest freezer that was a wedding gift from my grandparents, which is indispensible.
I don't know that "exciting" is the right word for me, but I am happy we will finally be able to get a fridge we like.
We want to replace ours too but we also want to remodel the kitchen so we haven’t bought a new one yet. We want a side by side with water.and ice in the door… haven’t decided on new or used yet.
Well, the reason we aren't replacing our stove and dishwasher this weekend too (we have the money in savings) is that we want to redo the kitchen. A fridge can be moved around to whereever we want it, but if we're going to move around our built in dishwasher, we might as well wait to replace that, and as for the stove, C wants for us to at least consider getting the house plumbed for gas, or getting a small propane tank so he can cook with gas again- hence no replacing the stove just yet.
I don't know. I get fired up just reading about it. New Shiny Appliances! Cool! You ever see the Brian Regan comedy piece about refrigerator salesmen? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUh1eGf57DY
I'll have to watch the video from home tonight.
Maybe I'd be more excited if we were doing the research, but we've done it all before. We'll walk into the store knowing exactly what fridge we're getting. I'll probably be a bit more exciting once we've actually purchased it.
