Animals Helping People: Service Dog Academy

April 12, 2012 | Filed under: Animals Helping People and tagged with: diabetic alert dogs, service dog academy

Today’s animals helping people is a little different that previous ones. Our focus today is on the Service Dog Academy inSeattle. We all know the benefits of service dogs. They help people in so many ways. The really neat thing about theServiceDogAcademy is that they will help you train a dog you already have to be a service dog.

They have specific classes for diabetic alert dogs, and can use that same program to for migraine, seizure and narcolepsy alerting.

Especially since diabetes is something that many people develop later in life, when it’s likely they already have a dog (if they want to have a dog), I love that theServiceDogAcademywill help you train your dog to be your service dog.

I think this has a number of benefits (besides the economic), which include the facts that you and your dog already have a close relationship, you are not trying to introduce a new dog to your household at an already stressful time.

In addition,ServiceDogAcademydoes the standard pet training and Canine Good Citizenship. They use the fees they earn from that to help subsidize their service dog training and offer discounted rates to those with medical issues.

For some people, training their own service dog isn’t a possibility, and for that reason, traditional service dog groups will always be needed. But service dogs are expensive. For those who already have a dog, or want to adopt a dog from the shelter,ServiceDogAcademycan help you turn your dog into a service dog for a fraction of the cost.

People helping animals help people. It’s a win all the way around.

I know that if I ever decide to do CGC, that's where I'll be going.
