Howie & the Pink Sock of Shame

March 29, 2012 | Filed under: Pet Health, Stories and tagged with: dog health, dog socks, lick granuloma, pink sock of shame

Howie has a lick granuloma on one of his feet. There was an injury there from his time as a stray. It looked to be healing just fine, but he started licking part of it again. We got him to stop using bitter apple spray and got it all healed up with using antibiotic ointment.

his poor foot

And then he started licking another part of the foot, and this time, the bitter apple didn’t stop him. So, he now has a the pink sock of shame.

We didn’t intend for it to be pink, but it’s what the store had in stock.

He’s not super fond of the sock, but hopefully we’ll be able to protect his poor foot long enough for it to heal properly.

the pink sock of shame

can I take it off?

Yes, it's very sad. And he's milking it for all it's worth

Poor Howie. Years ago, my Christie had one too. At the time she was elderly and had Cushing's disease. So even though we kept her from licking it, it never properly healed.

I hope the PSOS helps him heal up soon.

He's 12, so I don't know that this area will ever completely grow back hair, but we'd like it to get to the point that him licking it doesn't open a wound.

Oh, no! Poor little dude looks all deflated. 🙁 I hope it heals soon and that he doesn't lick any other places. (I didn't know there were socks of shame. Thanks for the info.)

I don't know that there are technically socks of shame. We just wanted something to cover it, so off to the pet store we went. We'd have preferred something more legging like (and I'm actually tempted to cut off the toe of a sock and see if he is less annoyed by it), but this is what they had.

We call it a sock of shame because it's purpose is the same as a cone of shame- stopping licking the wounded area

Poor wookie! Maggie would have that sock off & shredded in 3 seconds. Hope it works & keeps Howie from aggravating the wound. A friend of mine uses vetwrap on her flyball dogs. It's like a stretchy ace bandage that sticks to itself. You might be able to use it so his foot can be out.

We actually ended cutting the toe off and then putting it on so that the elastic part is on the bottom- more like a leg warmer now than a sock, and that seems to bother him much less, and be more difficult for him to take off.

We did consider the tape, but living in the Seattle area, with our current weather, we really need to be able to take whatever off every time he goes outside. If we were doing the tape, we'd be going through a lot of it.

So off to the pet store I go! I was thinking of a collar while we weren't around. I wonder if he will wear the sock? Thank you Erin!

Howie was able to pull off the sock fairly easily, and we had to remember to take it off every time we went outside. We ended up cutting off the toe and having him wear it like a leg warmer, with the elastic part that had been the top of the sock at the bottom. Made it much harder for him to pull off.
