Howie and the Leonberger

In case you’re wondering why Howie sometimes has a leash on, it’s because our dog park has a small small/shy dogs area where we can let Howie off leash. However, when we move in to the main part of the park, due to him being deaf (or partially deaf), he has no recall, so we need to keep him on leash to keep him safe.

I love watching them socialize at dog parks. Though my dog was practically banned from our local park for peeing on other dogs. D'oh. We've got it under control now, though. Anyway, fun pics.

Peeing on other dogs doesn't bother me. I've had to stop my dog from peeing on people (and have seen other dogs pee on people).

What a good boy Howie is! CindyLu is jealous of all the fun he has at the park!

Oh what I wouldn't give for a "shy dogs" area in our dog park. We can't take Bella any more because the other dogs are too big and boisterous. The size of the park also changed (used to be all of 37 acres, now the fenced in area where dogs are allowed off-leash is maybe an acre) and she has nowhere to get away from the rough-housers.

    Howie's adorable. (And June's a beauty, too!)

Not all of the dog parks around here have the small/shy dog area. Our favorite park doesn't. And with our two, that doesn't actually mattter, because while they are smaller dogs, they don't appear to know that, and they certainly aren't shy.

However, with Howie being deaf, I can't let him off leash in the big area. He doesn't have recall and he can wander too far away for me to get there if something happens. (There was a Golden just a couple weeks ago who was in a bad mood and tried to go after him when he went up for a sniff.) So we always start in the small dog area and let Howie have some freedom to trot around and sniff as he wants and meet other dogs. Then we put the leash back on him and move to the big area to let our two get the running they need.

I do like that we have dog parks around here that try to cater to the needs of more than just the needs of the boisterous big dogs.
