Meet Howie!

February 4, 2012 | Filed under: Fostering, Pictures and tagged with: dog fostering, howie, old dog haven, paws

I promised big news this weekend, and here it is. Meet our new foster dog, Howie.

Hi there!

Howie first came in to PAWS, and his sweetness got him adopted out, but then he had health issues almost instantly and the new family brought him back. So PAWS and Old Dog Haven got together and moved this sweet boy into foster care- with us.

Everyone relaxing on the bed

We’re very excited to be working with Old Dog Haven and are thrilled to have Howie in our home. He’ll stay with us while a full medical evaluation is done, and we’ll determine if he’s adoptable or not. Once that’s decided he’ll stay with us either until he’s adopted or as a final refuge home. There’s no way I’m letting this boy go to anyplace other than a forever home.

How can you resist that face?

I'm just finding my way around

Definitely a Beagle mix- right there under the food

Hanging around outside the kitchen

What's going on over there?

Curled up in his dog bed under my desk

He looks so sweet! Little old man dogs are the best.

He is very sweet. Very people oriented.

Yay for taking in one of the oldsters! He really has the sweetest face.

Your pack is very adaptable, just accepts a new stranger?

One of our goals for our dogs was that we be able to foster, so we've worked very hard to expose them to lots of different dogs. We go to the dog park a lot and pet sit for friends whenever they need it. We also have friends who kindly bring their dogs over to the house when they come visit.

Junebug has never met another dog she didn't like, and wants them all to play with her. And even if they don't she's fine with that.

Larry takes a little while to warm up to new dogs (and people). Howie is most definitely not part of his pack yet, but he accepts that he gets to be here.

That's wonderful. And that's something we didn't do with Bowdu early on, such that he's always a little touchy with new dogs that come to our home. We've socialized the heck out of him *outside* the house, but it's a different thing altogether when dogs visit *our* place.

I think I've learned that for us, it's about management and time. There are several areas of the house where he is much more likely to cross the line — because food is involved. So maybe all we need is a set of baby gates or two and we can foster, too. I would be very happy to give a mellow oldster like Howie a place to stay for a while.

Glad to hear that your area has a rescue dedicated to senior pets, too!

Howie is adorable. The photo of him hanging out under the meat cracked me up. He looks like the perfect little gentleman. Thank you so much for taking him in!

I don't know if it's the same there, but there are many beagles in my part of the world that have a pretty rough time of it. They are viewed as hunting tools and nothing more, many spend the majority of their time in outdoor pens with almost no human interaction. When they do end up in shelters, they can take the longest to adopt out. It's tragic.

Seattle is not a big hunting locale. We know some Red Bone Hounds that hunt, but most of the Beagles are spoiled house pets. And while they are a breed everyone recognizes, there aren't a whole lot of them around- or at least not at the dog parks.

He seems like a really sweet and calm dog! Looks like things are going really well. Congrats on your first foster dog! I am excited for you! Looks like your dogs don't mind too much, either. That's great!

Calm was one of the reasons we decided to foster an older dog. Our two are crazy enough.

June minds nothing as long as her sleeping and being adored are not interrupted. Larry, on the other hand, occasionally feels the need to guard some pieces of furniture for Howie. Luckily, Howie has no desire to get on the furniture.

I prefer fostering older dogs as well!

I think Howie is spoiling me. I don't know that we'll ever have another foster dog this easy. We've had no accidents, no issues with our dogs, etc. In fact, he's much better behaved than our dogs. We're probably being a bad influence on him.

What a sweet face. Older dogs have so much to give and are so rewarding to take into a home.

Everyone who's met him when we've gone out has adored him. I'm hoping that we can get him medically cleared and listed as adoptable. I mean, I'll keep for as long as he needs, but he deserves a forever home that's all about him.
