Junebug Played Fetch

Back in the winter of 2009/2010, when we first brought Junebug home, she enjoyed a good game of fetch with the tennis stick. In fact, fetch down the hallway was often a way we got our Beagle puppy the exercise she needed on the nights it was too dark and wet for a long walk. It was also a good way to give Smokey some peace from the puppy who otherwise thought he was the perfect toy.

However, once Larry came home, June stopped really playing with a lot of toys. She will tug with him over the dragon, and occasionally the soft frisbee, but not often. And her desire to play fetch pretty much went away. Larry’s drive was so much greater than her’s that she decided not to bother any more.

At the dog park, she will sometimes play fetch with a stick. But not any stick. It really has to be a stick she discovered and wanted to chew on, and she won’t always chase it.

So imagine our surprise last week, when she decided to chase a ball at the park. It was one we found there, a little too big for Larry (so he wasn’t super interested). C and SP were playing catch with it, when it went off course and our little Bug decided to chase after it.

Her desire to play fetch did not last as long as Larry’s does, but it was adorable. And it was really nice to see her decide to she wanted to play that way again.

Wait – she brought it BACK? Way to go, Junebug! Bella has surprised me recently by chasing a tennis ball too. But really, just chase. She catches it and then abandons it. I have yet to figure out how to get her to bring it back.

Like you and Junebug though, I used to play catch with Bella in the house when she was little. Never knew what disillusioned her to the game. Still, nice to see the "old ladies" get a little play back in their step though, isn't it?

PS – Sorry we've been distant. Read almost every post but just haven't had time to comment. Thanks for the recent shout-outs though. It is always appreciated.

      Amazing, I know.
As a puppy, the reason we used the tennis stick was so that we could get it back from her, but it was always a struggle (as keep away and tug are just as good games as fetch to a puppy).
With this ball, though, she did bring it back- which is really better than Larry who does love to chase a ball, and then be chased by those who would try to get the ball back.

And no worries about not being around. It\’s not like I\’ve been a commenting fool lately. I know you\’re there.
