Adjusting
Over the last week, our lives have gone a little crazy. I have talked about it more on my financial blog than here, but C and I are in the process of adopting. Last Tuesday night, a Little Girl (LG) was placed in our home. She is 9.5 years old and sweet as can be. She claimed to be afraid of dogs at first, but very quickly fell for Larry and June.
Both dogs are warming up to her very nicely, too. Last night, Junebug even stayed in her room with her for over 30 minutes after we left the room.
However, having a new person in the house, combined with my newly unemployed status, means new routines, and for the moment, lots of strangers in and out of the house. And that means some adjustment for the dogs.
June, being the sweet, easy going girl she is, seems to be doing fine. But she is also more willing to just “crate” herself than Larry is. (Her crate is actually now in the basement, but she has her den area in her bed under my desk, and she will just go curl up there if she needs a break.)
Larry, on the other hand, seems to be feeling some stress. He’s not eating as much, though some of that may be that we recently switched to a lamb and rice formula from a chicken and rice dog food. Still, when we first started using it, he was eating fine. That, and he seems to eat if C and I are both in the room with him, but barely touches the food if one of us isn’t around. This is very new for him. We are hoping that as things settles, he will get back to his normal eating.
However, having not caught Smokey’s hemangiosarcoma early on, this time, we are monitoring things closely, and if a little bit of time (and possibly a switch back to the chicken and rice dog food), we’ll be in at the vet.
All of this said, I am also going to be asking for a little leniency if posts are late (or occasionally missing) as we all adjust to our new world.
