Nope, Still a Mystery

May 2, 2013 | Filed under: Pet Health

DSCF1701On Saturday, Junebug had an unhappy tummy again. We called the vet. We took her in and got blood work for the suspected pancreatitis. Good news- her liver, kidney AND pancreas values were all good. She does NOT have pancreatitis.

Blood work did indicate a possible infection. X-Rays showed maybe small bits of bones working their way through her intestines. Oh, and gas. There was also gas in her intestines. So basically, she had gastroenteritis.

Because she had a fever on Saturday morning, they wanted to keep her and put her on fluids. We were supposed to be able to pick her up that evening. That night, they were concerned about the bits of bone and wanted to keep her overnight. The next morning, she still had a fever, so wanted to keep her until the afternoon. About 30 hours after we dropped her off, we got to take her home.

What does this really mean? Mostly that my Beagle apparently has an overly sensitive stomach. If we miss her getting into something at the dog park, she will get sick. But here’s the thing, at home, it takes a little over 24 hours to get better. At the vet, on IV fluids, it took her a little over 24 hours to get better.

DSCF1749We know she does not have a chronic condition, so we don’t have to worry about that. We know that it will take her the same amount of time to get better, regardless of whether she’s getting aggressive treatment or just being left alone.

Oh, and we know that different veterinarians are concerned about different things, and that they don’t all read the complete medical record. The night vet was worried about the bits of bone. No one else mentioned them. The Sunday morning vet informed us that they had found swelling in her neck (ie her impacted saliva glands, for which she was first seen at this clinic, almost 2 years ago). And we know that the Saturday morning/Sunday afternoon vet thinks gas in the intestine is worth mentioning, but not bits of bone.

So basically, Junebug is still undiagnosable. My mystery Beagle remains a mystery.

It's one of those moments when you wish you could communicate with your pet and ask them what's wrong and tell them that it's going to be alright. It's pains us also to see that they are in pain.

Mostly, I wish I could explain to her that when she eats poop at the dog park, she will be sick the next day.

Hope the mystery is solved soon. I had a Beagle puppy years ago who seemed to be able to digest anything. I'm puzzled by a Beagle with a sensitive stomach.

What a heartbreak. Hope Junebug feels better soon.

I have a friend with a cocker spaniel who had similar stomach problems because he kept getting into stuff on walks. My friend resorted to walking her dog with a basket muzzle every time and it prevented him from snatching stuff that would make him sick. Unfortunately, now she's having to continually explain that her dog is perfectly friendly but he's just a moocher who keeps making himself sick.

That was kind of like us with Howie on leash at the dog park. We kept having to say- no, he loves meeting other dogs and is perfectly good at it, he's just deaf.

This sounds like my week with Maggie. Bad stomach>throwing up>diarrhea all week. Multiple trips to the vet. Chicken & rice, the whole bit. She's never been sick before though, so I'm not sure what set this off. She's on the road to recovery, but hope this doesn't happen again. We wrote about it on our blog at slimdoggy.com too.

So glad to hear your Maggie is doing better. The one "nice" thing about June's tummy issues is that they do clear themselves up in a bout a day, every time.

Oh poor Junebug. As you know, we're kind of right there with you on mysterious ailments and upset tummies. At least we're pretty sure we know what's up w/Bella's belly and how to control it. And we're "lucky" that Bella isn't able to do the dog park so isn't usually out of our sight. My Lab used to eat EVERYthing and I think Beagles are much the same. Good luck getting Junebug to understand the correlation between "I eat ick, I feel sick". 🙁 (And give her a feel-better smooch from us.)

She's never going to understand the cause and effect. We just have to be a little more vigilant about stopping her when she appears to be eating something at the park.

And she does feel much better. Currently very sleepy, though, as there has been much dog park and running around lately. (But no eating what she shouldn't.)

Lol – vets can be pretty silly sometimes. When you get cases like these, it's always best to just have one vet stay on the case. That's not always possible though I guess. Some dogs just get tummy troubles sometimes. I hope no more tummy troubles for awhile!
