Typical Beagle

February 26, 2013 | Filed under: Dog Training

001One of the most common questions we get from people who have, or have had, Beagles about June is if we’ve had any problems with her being reliably housetrained. Apparently, it is a common issue with Beagles. Our answer was always no. We added that it was helpful to have another dog who was housetrained at the time we were housebreaking her.
But that was until this winter. Whether it was her tummy troubles or just bad weather, we don’t really know, but at one point, she stopped asking to go out in the evenings. At first it was on nights when we’d gone to the dog park and so the other dogs weren’t asking to go out. But then, it got to be almost every night.
At some point after she had eaten her dinner, she’d leave the bedroom and just go piddle somewhere- living room, hallway, bath mat, it didn’t matter. She would do it 30 seconds after leaving our room- not even enough time for one of us to realize she’d left and get up and take her out. It was frustrating to say the least.
002So, we decided we had to treat her as if she was being potty trained again. She goes out on a schedule, she’s not allowed in a room without us. And when she does her business outside, she gets praised. It is working. This week, she has started asking to go out again, at least when are also in the living room or kitchen.
Sometimes, I wish Junebug wasn’t such a typical Beagle.

Hope it continues to work for you! I feel your pain with a typical beagle myself!

I had a "typical Beagle" when I was young and there seemed to be no problem with housebreaking. When I went away to college, my parents realized she was never housebroken. She slept with me and never left my side when I was at home. But sadly my parents didn't have time for that kind of relationship with her. But happily she found a home with other Beagles and adjusted well to peer pressure.

Peer pressure is actually my answer to most people who have problems house training dogs. I always say, if you have a second, reliably trained dog, they will teach the first to go outside much better than we as humans can. Smokey was certainly the reason we didn't have problems when we were first doing this. But the current mix- Larry does NOT like the wet and will go out as few times a day as we let him and Howie wanting out all the time, we stopped being on an evening all dog out schedule and were really dependent on them telling us when they needed to go out.

I know the feeling. Lulu has a small bladder, so I have to keep a sharp eye on her. But sometimes she doesn't let me know. That's frustrating!

I think that's what was frustrating for us. If Junebug were letting us know she needed out and we were ignoring her, or taking a while to respond, that would be one thing. But it really was- she's in the bedroom with us. She leaves the room. I get up to take her out and low and behold, there's pee in the hallway. But it was always happening at roughly the same time of day, so now we take the dogs out right after they eat their dinner, and we're not having the problem, and she's started scratching at the sliding glass door again, so fingers crossed we're passed this.

I had no idea that was a Beagle problem! Good luck with retraining.

Our beagle foster dog, Layla, slipped in her house training when she first came to our house. But she got right back on track once we started keeping an eye on her. But given her hatred of cold, I could see how freezing temps could tempt her to piddle indoors.

Of course, any dog can slip. I don't know if it's a beagle thing or not?

I pretty much assume that when a dog comes into a new situation, there are going to be some potty issues. We've had minor ones with all of our dogs as they have come home from shelters. (With the exception of Howie, who loves to go outside and asks to go out even when he doesn't have business to do.) Larry took the longest for us to get in synch with, but I think that's just part of bringing a dog home from a shelter.

Gosh, we've had a lot of beagles in our family and I never heard of that being a "typical" beagle thing before. (We did have some problems with our girl being able to hold it all day once she got older – but that was related to some kidney troubles she was having). The usual "typical" beagle thing is how stubborn they are! And food motivated!

    Good luck with retraining her!

I would not have thought of it as a typical Beagle thing, either, except that EVERY person we've run into who has a Beagle or had a Beagle asks us about the potty training. My guess is it is very much tied to their stubborn nature. She's actually retraining quite easily, once we got our act together to be retraining consistently and remembering to take them out on a schedule.
